WASHINGTON — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton today is visiting the biggest naval base on the East Coast as part of her role advising Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on making the military more efficient.

The trip to the Norfolk Naval Station — which comes as Clinton is increasingly being mentioned as a 2008 presidential candidate — is another move by the former first lady to boost her knowledge of the military and position herself as a solid centrist on defense issues.

Clinton, who serves on the Senate's Armed Services Committee, will be joined on the tour of the Norfolk Naval Station by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and military experts.
