Thanks to all of our readers who have written offering to make contributions to Steve Gardner or otherwise expressing interest in helping him. We tracked down Mary Laney, the freelance reporter who wrote the Chicago Sun-Times story that Deacon linked to earlier today. Here's her message:

I'm glad you picked up my column on Steve Gardner. He certainly deserves better than he's gotten for speaking up about what happened on that Swiftboat those years ago. I'm not at liberty to give out his address or phone number, but he has allowed me to give you his email address: sgardner5@carolina.rr.com. I hope a great job can be found for this man. Best, Mary Laney

We've already forwarded one message with information regarding available jobs. Let's see if we can help a friend in need.

Just heard Sean Hannity say that they will have Steve on the show later in the week. He then said "things are being done to help". He didn't elaborate, he just said to wait until later in the week.

I totally agree. Did you read the article by Bill O'Reilly that was on drudge today? The subject was about Dan Rather but O'Reilly pretty well trashed (in my opinion) the Swifties. Of course, he also said that he KNOWS that Dan Rather would NEVER put papers on TV that he knew were no authentic, so I don't trust Bill O'Reilly. Unfortunately, a lot of people watch him, read him and listen to his show so I blame him partly for Steve's problems.

Wasn't there a situation where some woman was supposedly fired for her support of kerry and then kerry offered her a position with his campaign? Well, here's another chance for him to show his moral fiber, repudiate and denounce the ungodly mess and then maybe pull a string or two [do not hold your breath].

No kidding. He's looking out for who again? Oh, that's right. Bill O'Reilly.

Can't bring myself to watch his show any more--never did like the radio version.

O'Reilly is an egotistical bore with a bad case of celebrity envy. Every time he has a famous lib on his show he practically licks their shoes. He has become thoroughtly unwatchable.

I would be willing to make a donation to a fund set up for Gardner. They should set something up or give him something from the proceeds of the book sale to help him get on his feet.

Whatever we can do---I'm sure having threads trashing him doesn't hurt.

I think anyone especially in the media with so-called "clout" that has trashed the Swifties need to be Freeped. And good.

Also, anything the Swifties need like Steve, we should help with. Not only did they do the most to defeat Kerry, remember, they are Veterans, very honorable Veterans that never got a welcome home ticker tape parade like in WWI and WWII.

Rather may not have "known" that the memos were forgeries, but those memos were so important to his story that he gladly accepted them at face value and did not even want to know how they ended up in his hands.

It's like when a guy pulls up next to you in the mall parking lot, pops open the trunk of his car, and, as he nervously looks around in every direction, proceeds to show you some very interesting merchandise at suspiciously low prices. You understand instinctively that the merchandise is stolen. Dan Rather is the kind of crook who doesn't ask questions. He just shells out the bucks and grabs the goods as he, too, nervously glances around.

In defending Rather, Bill O'Reilly shows exactly what kind of character he has. In my opinion he has lost all credibility. A shame, too. Whatever happened to the "no spin" straight shooter of a few years ago?

I guess you can take the reporter out of CBS, but you can't take CBS out of the reporter.
