Criticize Ms. Rice's policies, but not her race or appearance

By ROSE RUSSELL

SOME say Secretary of State-designate Condoleezza Rice's role in the Bush Administration is subservient. I just don't see it.

She is more than qualified. Once confirmed - and it's likely that will happen after four years as national security adviser, not to mention her foreign affairs service in George H.W. Bush's administration - she will be the first black woman to head the U.S. State Department, a position that should curry pride and congratulations.

Instead, Ms. Rice, who has a doctorate from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver, has been the subject of much ridicule that pokes fun at her race rather than her opinions. A white Wisconsin radio host described her and other blacks who work for the White House as servile. But some newspapers' cartoonists have gone over the top, too.

On Nov. 17 John Sylvester of WTDY-AM in Madison called Ms. Rice "Aunt Jemima." He also labeled Secretary of State Colin Powell an "Uncle Tom." The terms usually describe African-Americans who generally bow to try to please whites and who may seldom have much to do with other blacks. Normally we see the secretary of state and national security adviser in their official roles, and because their colleagues are predominantly white, that's who they are surrounded by.

Why doesn't anyone ever lecture the hate-filled libs on being polite when talking about Christians, conservatives or Republicans in general?

Liberals can't do this because they are racists at heart and she doesn't fit their bigoted sterotype of a black.

In the Rice matter, we all can see who the actual racists are! Once again liberals (new Stalinists) have accused republicans and conservatives of the very things that they, themselves, are guilty of! Every time a liberal (new Stalinist) tells you what to fear in a conservative, he is telling you what to fear in himself!

I was truly shocked this morning to read here on FR that some here think that FR posters "pander" to Condi due to her race! That is so wrong in my estimation ... I think Republicans appreciate that she is genuinely qualified to do her job regardless of her race.

sub·ser·vi·ent ( P ) Pronunciation Key (sb-sûrv-nt) adj.

1. Subordinate in capacity or function.

Where's the problem?

The entire cabinet should be subservient.

The author displays nowhere near the level of outrage she would if a white conservative had said something similar about a black Democrat - she pulls her punches on every single critique. The whole article's tone is: "I hate this woman, too, just be careful how you criticize her because we don't want to give the Republicans any political ammunition."

Pat Oliphant's depiction of Ms. Rice as Mr. Bush's parrot is entertaining, but he drew her lips especially large, as if to draw attention to many blacks' large facial features.

can't say the same for cartoonist Jeff Danziger's use of a noted quote from "Gone With the Wind" when Butterfly McQueen said she knew nothing about helping women give birth. In Danziger's cartoon, an angry Ms. Rice sits in a rocking chair, barefoot, and feeding aluminum tubes. One of the remarks is that she knows "nuthin' about aluminum tubes."

Doonesbury had Mr. Bush call Ms. Rice "Brown Sugar" in a cartoon.

Just more Communist-American racism.

Their IQ is so low that is all they can think of.

Typical Facist Tactics.

She is intelligent, she is capable, she is qualified, she is black if she were liberal she would be the answer to every Democrats dream. but she isnt Donna Brazille or Cynthia McKinney or Maxine Waters,, as I said before she is intelligent. So now they attack her.

Because the Christians, conservatives and Republicans aren't always polite about - among others - Henry Waxman, Robert Reich, Michael Moore, Barbra Streisand, Maureen Dowd, Helen Thomas or Hilary Clinton? i.e., Liberals?

Don't worry, black Americans will see this for just what it is. It's going to leave a bad taste in their mouths. This is not a good tactic by the liberals at all. Just another step in breaking the grip.

I think most of us are pretty polite, actually, except perhaps among us girls here on Free Republic, and professional rabble rousers like Ann Coulter.

I think people should quit being so thin skinned...And although I don't doubt CR's qualifications, I seriously doubt she will be very effective at her new job...

I don't see her as being tough...She certainly doesn't sound tough to me...And I don't think our enemies will take her seriously...

You know what I'd like to see?

Come 2006... Cheney steps down. Call it health, whatever.

Bush replaces Cheney with Rudy Guiliani. Keeps Condi at SecState for the entire term. Rudy/Condi ticket in 2008. Eight years of them both... and then Condi runs in her own right in 2016. And her SecState ought to be John Bolton!

I know Rudy is somewhat anti-gun. However, Rice would keep him in check on that - being the "Second Amendment purist" she's known for - and Bolton stood up for us civil arms proponents at the UN Small Arms conferences.
