This may be posted elsewhere, if so forgive me. I received this from a friend who is a Marine veteran and a member of a local American Legion Marine Detachment. He asked that I pass on this information to the good people of Free Republic.
"The Number 1 request at Walter Reed hospital is phone cards. The government doesn't pay for long distance phone charges and these guys, many of them amputees, are rationing their calls home. Many will be there throughout the holidays. Remember that most are from financially burdened families. Support the troops." Send phone cards of any amount to:
Medical Family Assistance Center Walter Reed Medical Center 6900 Georgia Avenue, NW Building 2, Third Floor, Room 3E01 Washington, D.C. 20307-5001
I don't care if its been posted 10 times already, it bears repeating. Well done and thank you.
Thanks for the heads-up. Will have some in the mail by tonight.
bump this puppy up
BUMP! Good post.

Operation Uplink is a unique program that keeps military personnel and hospitalized veterans in touch with their families and loved ones by providing them with a free phone card. Using contributions from supporters like you, Operation Uplink purchases phone cards and distributes them to servicemen and women who are separated from those they care about.
And is sponsered by the VETERANS OF FORIEGN WARS or as many of us refer to the V.F.W. http://www.vfw.org
Here is the direct link where you can participate online:

"FORIEGN" = Foreign
Apparently they all could use phone cards but it seems to me that those in Walter Reed should have our first priority.
Am sending some tomorrow.
Hate to show my ignorance but where do you buy phone cards? I sort of know for cell phone use but long distance Im drawing a blank. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Thanks for the post.
I just went there and sent'em $100 bucks...I feel better now
But the phone cards are so limited. You would think it might be cheaper to get cells donated or at least discounted to be assigned to a group so that they could have unlimited calling.
what a great Christmas idea bump
Thank you for your support.
As one who knows from personal experience, there is no better morale booster for those in combat than to receive mail and have the opportunity to actually speak to family and friends over the phone.
War can be a very lonely existence.

Mustang, you got a phone # for this office?
I sell fone cards here in my store and my current inventory is about $3,600 in $5's and $10's. Total of about 385 cards.
I'm going to send them all but I'd like to be able to get them to a breathing body I can talk to instead of just dumping them in the mail.
Tks in advance........
If you shop at Walmart you can find them there. My daughter sent some to a few of our relatives in the military.
Thanks for the replies and other options available.
Great CTOCS! I'll see about that phone number for you. Calling my buddy now.
