Kim Jong-il's Trinity: N. Korean Subversion in S. Korea

Kim Jong-il's Trinity: N. Korean Subversion in S. Korea

I recently met in a foreign country a N. Korean defector who used to work at S. Korean section of N. Korean intelligence. According to him, Kim Jong-il characterize the main principle of N. Korea's S. Korean operation as 'trinity.' It allegedly originates from the Kim Jong-il's instruction that N. Korean intelligence, pro-North (non-governmental) elements in S. Korea, and S. Korean government should make up the unbreakable trinity which would lay siege on those willing to fight for S. Korea(comment: conservative activists.)

If the N. Korean outfit, Unification Front, sent out the instruction to pro-North elements in S. Korea that they should attack Hannara Party(comment: the main S. Korean conservative opposition), or Kang In-duk, the former Minister of Unification(known for his tough stance against N. Korea), or Chosun Ilbo(comment: the biggest daily newspaper which is also conservative), pro-North elements would follow the instruction, start making noises, and S. Korean government joins the attack later. The objectives of this South-North joint operation, according to the defector, include the drive to scrap National Security Act, the resignation of Minister Kang In-duk(already done), dissolution of NIS(S. Korean intelligence agency), attacks on Chosun Ilbo and Donga Ilbo(comment: two major conservative dailies), and abandoning the notion that N. Korea is our "Main Enemy" (in military and security matters.)

Kim Jong-il has regarded Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun regimes as his subordinate organizations, reportedly telling his close associates, "We have nine provinces in N. Korea, and a "Republic of Korea" province in S. Korea."

It has been said that S. Korean government was cut out of intelligence-sharing loop for quite a while.

There are a lot of moles and informants to clean up. Useful idiots are too many.

My read of this suggests treason on the part of the SK government and an impending military strike from WITHIN SK for purposes of "unification."

Why would the leaders of SK wish to subordinate themselves to an economic basket case?

The North is using one of the same avenues that our own Left started using in the 60's: College students.

As explained to me, all Pyongyang would have to do is ask hundreds of thousands of leftists in the South to walk north, overrun US/ROK positions (as if they could) and walk across the DMZ to serve as human shields in case there was an inkling that the US was going to attack. I wouldn't be surprised if they had such an influence, but how they would get across a landmined DMZ is anybody's guess.

PS, Hey TLR and others: looks more and more like Kim Jong-chol is going to get the nod, either officially or unofficially. I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing stories about his "illustrious leadership" (at 23 years old!), posters and maybe Kim Jong chol buttons.

Re #5

Yes, Kim's son is reportedly groomed for top job. This move could shorten his lifespan, though. However, his days could be numbered, anyway

So what purpose do the US forces serve? To keep the South from attacking the North, vice versa, or both? Surely both know that any serious aggression toward US forces by either would bring swift major retaliation...

There are so many Korean forces--500,000+ on either side of the DMZ--that the US force is insignificant in terms of size, right? I know that many in the ROK don't like Americans...

Unfortunately, it is his skinny younger half-brother. Well, he may not be as colorful. Given time, he will be "made" into a colorful figure. I count on Freepers' talent.:)

I think that the standard best guess is they will use tunnels. Four have been found so far:

Global Security: Forty-five Korean and foreign journalists were present at the scene of discovery of the fourth tunnel on March 3, 1990. The tunnel is 145 meters below the surface and is 2,052 meters long. It is located 26 km northeast of Yangku. The tunnel could allow the transit of some 30,000 soldiers per hour.

Tunneling Toward Disaster

By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF,
NY Times, January 21, 2003
ALONG THE DEMILITARIZED ZONE,
South Korea

With the North Korean crisis likely to become much more dangerous than the American public appreciates, I came here to a hillside on the Demilitarized Zone to peer into a tunnel six feet wide and six feet high, 220 feet below the surface, leading north.

This is one of four North Korean infiltration tunnels discovered over the years. Each is capable of transporting 10,000 soldiers per hour behind South Korean defensive lines, and the biggest can accommodate jeeps and artillery. Based on defector interviews, the spooks believe that there are at least 15 more tunnels that haven't been found yet, and that some reach nearly to Seoul.

Re #11

It is true that the very presence of sizable U.S. force in S. Korea makes a powerful strategic statement especially toward China. U.S. force is slowly becoming less and less a counterweight to N. Korea than that of China.

However, the size and nature of force is subject to change.

U.S. presence can also serve S. Korean strategic interest in counterbalancing China's influence. Many in S. Korea refused to consider it. However, recent Chinese behavior compelled them to give it a second thought.

In U.S. strategic equation, S. Korea is good to have around, but is not as valuable as Japan. Moreover, what interests U.S. is S. Korea as a real estate, not S. Korea with everything and everybody in it.

It was my understanding that US forces number around 37,000.

Thank you for your informative post, I really know very little about this.

I've been in two of the four North Korean infiltration tunnels into the south, and been to the outside of another of them. In fact, my estimate is that there must be 20 to 30 tunnels in total...only four have been discovered.

Thanks for the post -- interesting how many of these objectives have been met or are being actively worked. Key question would be whether the coincidence is due to NK plot or fabricated reporting (or both! :) )

In response to #15, I don't think China is taking the place of the US as a counterweight towards NK. I think rather that the Korean peninsula (both sides, in their own unique way) are being used more and more as a pawn by China against US influence in NE Asia.

Terribly busy with skool business. Thanks for keeping me up to date! :)

Re #19

Can you elaborate on "fabricated reporting"? Are you refering to possible fabrication by Cho Gab-je or by the N. Korean defector?
