A 54-year-old passenger vanished as a ship returned from a five-day cruise to the Bahamas, and a daylong ocean search turned up no sign of him. The hunt was called off yesterday. Glen Sherridan was reported missing by his wife a day earlier, after the Carnival Cruise Line ship Celebration docked in Jacksonville.

The ship's electronic exit and entry program showed he had not disembarked after arrival, and a crew search of the vessel came up empty, Carnival said.

Gloria Sherridan said she had last seen her husband about 1:30 a.m. Thursday. She said he was an early riser and might have fallen overboard as early as 4 a.m., said Coast Guard Petty Officer Bobby Nash.

Nash said the ship then would have been about 13 miles off northeastern Florida. A boat and helicopter scoured 350 square miles of ocean and the St. Johns River

Excerpted as required. This was a short article and the couple of sentences omitted state the cruise ship was a dozen or so miles off the coast. Hope this gentleman is found.

This reminds somewhat me of Carl Hiaason's newest book Skinny Dip where a fellow pushes his wife off a cruise ship. She survives to mete out the appropriate revenge.

Coincidentally, my daughter went on her senior cruise earlier this year on the Celebrity.

He was last seen hanging over the ship's bow yelling "I am king of the world!"

Crappy Sentence Award goes to:

She said he was an early riser and might have fallen overboard as early as 4 a.m., said Coast Guard Petty Officer Bobby Nash.

They may want to rethink their lastest ad campaign.

Freeper wtc911 recommended Hiaason last month and I've read five of his books already. He is hysterical and I highly recommend them as well.

It's been so long since I went on a cruise, I don't recall exactly. The picture above seems fairly representative if my memory is correct.

"I have never been on a cruise ship, what are the sides/railings like?"

I took a cruise on a Carnival ship. I think you would have to jump or be hoisted over the railing.

"I have never been on a cruise ship, what are the sides/railings like? Would it be easy to all overboard? Sounds strange for it to be so easy to fall off such a commercial cruise line..."

That is correct. You would almost have to jump or be pushed overboard. The cruise lines are extremely sensitive to something like this, with kids running around, and drunks. I cannot see how it would be possible to fall overboard as an accident? I hope they find out something.

Decks have waist high railings, usually open horizontal bars, sometimes solid. It would not be easy to accidentally fall off, but easy for someone to climb and jump.

I had a co-worker introduce me to Hiaasen last year. He does an excellent job on characters. Loved "Stormy Weather" and "Sick Puppy".
