GENEVA (Reuters) - A United Nations (news - web sites) anti-torture body criticized Britain on Friday for the "unsatisfactory" conditions in its prisons, including a "substantial number of deaths in custody," and urged it to act at once to improve them.
The U.N. Committee Against Torture, reviewing British compliance with an international treaty outlawing inhuman and degrading treatment, also expressed concern at parts of an anti-terrorism law which allows "potentially indefinite detention" of foreigners without trial.

Or Iran, or does the UN Anti-Torture Body approve of stoning 13 year old girls? Nigeria? Sudan? China?
What a farce ~ that bunch of deceitful louts at the UN!
Funny they should bring up torture. I recall a story of a few UN "peacekeepers" who were accused of torturing a Somalian child by hanging him over a fire.
Personally I think it was one of the events that led to the attack on our soldiers in Mogudishu.
And they are not saying anything about N. Korea either.

LONDON, England -- Human rights campaigners say they have obtained documented evidence that North Korea tests chemical weapons on prisoners.
Kim Sang Hun, a South Korean activist, told reporters in London Wednesday that a North Korean defector saw evidence of human experiments and stole papers documenting the tests.
"I am willing to testify to the horrendous crimes by the North Korean regime of human biological experimentation that has been perpetuated over the years in this factory," the younger Kang's statement quoted the elder Kang as saying.
In a recent BBC report, a man claiming to be a former North Korean agent described seeing prisoners gassed to death.
I'm wracking my brain trying to remember if any of the 58 world islamic states have been mentioned recently at all...
When you are powerless, and only in it for how much money you can steal, it's a lot easier and safer to pick on your friends and economic supporters...

"Activists have made claims of gruesome human rights abuses against prisoners in North Korea for years.
In November last year, tales of torture, public executions, rampant starvation and human trafficking were woven throughout almost two hours of testimony before a U.S. Senate hearing on North Korea."
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Tales of torture, public executions, rampant starvation and human trafficking were woven throughout almost two hours of testimony Tuesday before a Senate hearing on North Korea.
Sen. Sam Brownback, a Republican representative in Kansas, called the hearing of a Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee to highlight North Korea's alleged human rights violations.
"I'm hopeful that this hearing will begin to expose the true nature of the North Korean regime and its reputation as one of the worst violators of human rights in the world today," he said as the session opened.
"substantial number of deaths in custody," and urged it to act at once to improve them.
I agree, we must work to improve upon the number of deaths in custody.
Just between us, and a few thousand Freepers, I think the 9/11 hijackers hit the wrong building.
Do the Anti-Christian Lawyers Union have an office in the UN building?
More needs to be said about the outlandish and hyperbolic wording the Reuters and other newswire article authors use in their titles. "Body slams"?. Gimme a break.
Yeah, that always struck me as a bit unprofessional.
Although I think the "Body" is part of the phrase "UN Anti-Torture Body".
Useless Nation at it again. They say nothing about North Korea, Cuba, China, Iran, Iraq, Palestine, and Saudi Arabia.
Nigeria,China,Sudan, and Iran. What do they have in common? They're brutal regimes, and thus exempt from serious criticism by the UN.Democracies are easier targets.I agree with you 100%, but "deceitful" is too kind a word to use. I'd add criminal and rotten to the core for starters.
