While a rather long vanity, I felt it my duty as a good member of freerepublic to post knowledge of the shooting area and culture. In my opinion, freerepublic functions best when it brings personal expertise to bear on national events. These are my personal observations. As such I did not include references or footnotes. I ask forgiveness for spelling and grammer errors, in part as I am visiting for the holiday and felt pressed to post this while the topic was of continued interest.

Bump
I hope your thread sticks around until this holiday is over. I'm afraid not too many freepers will see it.
Well done.

The Hmong have mostly settled around the fringes of the North Woods. I would consider Eau Claire to be on the fringe, as is Minneapolis/St. Paul. There are bound to be some Hmong in the area, but I have not heard of them as a large presence. Most of the conversations about the Hmong involved incidents outside of the North Woods, which is rather sparsely populated. This is why I did not include any information about them. Perhaps others can do better and aid in our enlightenment.

I am not surprised that no one shot back at this assailant. The event is so rare as to be far outside normal experience. I seem to recall hearing that, of the first five persons shot by the actor, that they had only one weapon between them, and the holder of that piece was shot first.
As far as I now know, it has yet to be determined if that particular weapon was shot at all during the incident.

It sounds a lot like our upper peninsula of Michigan.
I will add that a hunter was killed in this state about two years ago not far from the site of this recent shooting. He was shot twice in the back and the case was never solved. There does seem to be a potential connection that interests the police.

I missed the part about the Hmong and their diaspora from Vietnam. The first Hmong diaspora was from Laos. It stemmed from the fact that having worked closely with us against the Pathet Lao during the war, the Hmong became victims of genocide after the war. The headbanger in question is a bit young to have participated in the war, although it is possible that he did. More likely he came over in the last 20 years. One story has him in a Guard outfit in Kali, but with a clerical, not a line MOS. All that said, I too would like to hear mtwain's observations on the behavior of Hmong "hunters" toward other hunters, landowners, etc. On this point, under the circumstances, his silence is deafening.

As a man who has spent many a Thankgiving in a "North Woods" deer camp (Hiles, WI) I can vouch for all of this being true.
Thanks for the post.

Thanks. If venison steaks became popular throughout the US, your herds would dwindle quickly. Probably, too quickly.

Wow! Excellent! Thanks for posting this - it certainly corresponds with my recollection also, growing up and living nearby. And...I also worked for DNR in the 70's. Small world, eh?
