(Canadian) PM's motorcade strikes girl in Sudan

KHARTOUM, SUDAN - Prime Minister Paul Martin's motorcade struck and injured a young girl as it was leaving a displaced person's camp near Khartoum, Sudan on Thursday.

The girl was taken to hospital by ambulance and X-rayed but has reportedly not suffered serious injury.

She was hit as the crowd pressed forward toward the vehicles as they left the camp.

Martin plans to visit the girl in hospital.

The injury occurred just after the prime minister had delivered a speech offering a message of hope to those living in the camp, home to more than 200,000 people.

Martin arrived in Sudan on Thursday as part of his 10-day tour of Africa, Chile and Brazil.

He is to meet the heads of the Sudanese government in Khartoum to urge a halt to the humanitarian crisis taking place in the Darfur region.

The fight between government-backed Arab militias and African rebel groups in the western region of Darfur has driven almost two million people from their homes. The United Nations estimates at least 70,000 people have died since March as a result of poor conditions in refugee camps.

Martin has also said he will insist humanitarian aid be open to all of Sudan and that the Sudanese government co-operate with African Union troops.

Fortunately the girl is OK.

What struck me as odd though, is the use of the phrase "displaced person's camp". Has the term "refugee camp" now also become politically incorrect?

"displaced person"

Back in the fifties "displaced person" was used to describe immigrants from Europe . Many of whom had lost everything , including family , in WW2 . Most did well and made fine citizens . Their children certainly have . Back then people called them a "DP" , which didn't necessarily mean "displaced person".

Does this represent realization by the warm and fuzzy, socialist nations of the world that starving them to death was simply taking too long and a more direct alternative was required?

I'm a "displaced person". I feel this girl's pain.

We need a war crime tribunal to look into this. This is a violation of the Geneva Convention. If he came into this country we could put him on trial.

If he came into this country we could put him on trial.

Is that a promise? Don't tease us now.
