Ellen (DeGeneres) Hooks Up Military With Cruises

LOS ANGELES - For relatives and friends of U.S. troops serving in Iraq, "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" was the place to be. Studio audience members, all with a military connection, were surprised with the gift of a free cruise at a taping Tuesday. The episode of the syndicated talk show, with guest Tom Hanks, aired Wednesday.

A total of 250 seven-day cruises for four, along with taxes and fees, were given in appreciation of troops deployed from three California bases: Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Camp Pendleton and Fort Irwin.

Celebrity Cruises is providing the vacations, available at any time to allow for troops overseas to take part on their return, according to a spokeswoman for the show.

DeGeneres also joined with the USO to send more than 5,000 care packages to the audience's relatives and friends in Iraq. The episode will be repeated on Thanksgiving on the Armed Forces Network.

I have already come out of the closet and admitted I like Ellen. Glad to see so many others here do as well ...

She is giving nothing, just taking the credit for Celebrity Cruise Lines' generous donation.

And Bob Hope never spent a penny of his to visit the troops during Christmas. Does that make him a scumbag, too? She's giving her name, time, and support to the troops. Give it a rest and learn to appreciate the good things.

I thank everyone on this thread who represented Freerepublic well, with positive comments about Ellen's really sweet gesture of appreciation for our country's military members.

OK, my 2 cents...(my apologies to JohnHuang2) :^

Everyone keeps saying her private life is her private life and no ones business, blah blah blah....

TRUE!

I say....TRUE!

HOWEVER, Ellen made her private life very public when she outed herself on her sitcom.....

..and she's been very public with it ever since.

Gee you all....don't be fooled!!!!!

In my opinion, I think it's one of the first salvos over the bridge from the radical, liberal left to garner our attention, affection for the next election!!!!!

Wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!!.....some of these Hollywoodsters are very smart, and they know when to engage on the right side if it suits their purposes!!!!!!!!!!!

She'll kill you with kindness.......

Please don't buy into this!!!!!

I know some folks will say I'm not charitable or just plain wrong....

...but I'm very wary of her sudden love affair with the military.

I saw her at the Improv in San Francisco some years ago; weeknight, hardly anybody there. She was just killer; absolutely hilarious. This was years before her TV show, her coming out, yada yada. The girl has talent.

I must say this one more time.

It's a TROJAN HORSE!!!....
..She'll win you over, then she will smack you down.

...It's the frog in the boiling water....you all are already defending her.....so eventually, when the gays try to change the laws and marry.....you'll say....

..'Oh that's not so bad....look what Ellen did for our troops'

....Don't go over to the darkside, folks!

agree with your comments but I probably will have to skip over them from now on ... why do you post your replies in that teeny tiny font? It takes effort on your part to post that way, and it requires extra effort from us to read it. What gives?

And the rest of us just shake our heads. You're where it all goes wrong. God bless you both and calm your tortured hearts. I urge you to read about Jesus' loving ways. Nowhere do they encourage tempering your love with paranoia. It is so wrong-headed and bars you from the Kingdom of Heaven. May you find His Way.

I have always liked her and felt sorry for her when her sitcom was cancelled. I may have questioned her need for coming out on her show but that was her decision and she paid the price for it. I do think she is funnny but I guess since she does not humiliate other people with her humor some do not find her funny.

Guennie, the military needs to have people supporting them. I doubt that those folks at her show care about her lifestyle. Someone did something nice for them, and I will bet they are grateful.

If she will SHUT UP about her sex life, I will be very grateful. I am not going to attack her for doing something good...something that known heterosexuals like BARBRA STREISAND and MICHAEL MOORE would NEVER do.

It would please me if she is leading the way in supporting our troops in the Hollywood set. It doesn't mean that I will support any of her efforts in gay political causes. I am quite able to separate the good activities from the bad.

If we do not appreciate the good that people do, even if they are public sinners, I don't think we are living our faith correctly. Remember, Jesus dealt with all sorts of people who were outcasts, and praised them for their hospitality. He didn't praise their sins, but he did praise their good actions.

I am sorry, but I disagree with you on this issue.

Right on. Her humor is top class and clean, and there are no victims of her humor. She's an intelligent, kind, decent girl.

I believe only the hatred for gays blinds people to her real self.

As I said in my first post, I think she is a very nice person and deserves the success she is now enjoying. She could have jumped on the gay marriage bandwagon, etc but she chose to champion the troops by offering this act of kindess toward them. She's a great American.

#173...sigh...Et tu, Jane...:(

Sorry, I'm sticking to my guns on this one.

I very much disagree with you that this demeans or negates my 'faith'...or that I'm unloving or less of a Christian if I don't accept or if I have deep reservations over her 'gifts'....

I support the military with all my heart, and believe they deserve every break they can get....

...oldngray, ohio, I would appreciate your imput if you have time today.

#171....However hurtful your words are directed at me, you have the freedom here at FR to say them.

..I will not argue with you.

I stand on my suspicions of this 'gift'.

Go ahead and stick to your guns. That's ok with me. I just disagree. I also don't believe I said that this demeans your faith. I just simply have a different view than you about this.

I really would appreciate dropping this subject on a Thanksgiving morning. I don't believe I want to discuss this when I am getting ready for a holiday that usually puts me in a good mood as I count my blessings.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Guennie.

#173...Your post made good points and completely agreed with until I got to your 4th paragraph.

That hurt very much!

But as I told Rambler, here at FR you have the freedom to say what you want, within reason.
