Dutch Shocked by Public Death Wish from Muslim Wed Nov 24, 2004 07:40 AM ET
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch leaders on Wednesday condemned comments by a Muslim teacher who said he hoped for the death of a popular politician, further stoking religious tension prompted by the murder of a filmmaker critical of Islam. Abdul-Jabbar van de Ven, a Dutch convert to Islam, told a Dutch television chat show on Tuesday he hoped anti-immigration populist Geert Wilders would soon die, although he did not want him to be killed by a Muslim.
Interior Minister Johan Remkes said he was horrified by the remarks and said the Justice Ministry would look into the matter. "It is too crazy for words," he told Dutch news agency ANP.
Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk agreed:
"How can it be that we have sunk so far in the Netherlands? I am really worried about this," she told Dutch television.
Wilders, whose popularity has soared since he called for a crackdown on Muslim militants following the murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh this month, has been the subject of several death threats for his views on Islam and immigration.
Wilders is seen as a new Pim Fortuyn, the Dutch maverick killed by an animal rights activist in 2002. Wilders wants to launch a new right-wing party ahead of elections due in 2007 and a recent poll put him ahead of the ruling Christian Democrats.
Van de Ven said he would prefer Wilders to die of an illness, like cancer, and added he had felt some happiness when he heard of the death of Van Gogh. A Dutch-Moroccan man has been charged with the murder and with threatening another politician.
In a declaration on Wednesday, Van de Ven -- who converted to Islam aged 14 and is now a Muslim teacher with links to a Saudi foundation -- said he had gone into hiding and had had not wanted to urge anybody to kill Wilders.
Meanwhile, a debate raged about Muslim treatment of women after an imam refused to shake hands with Verdonk.
Imam Ahmad Salam told a news conference on Tuesday he was keen to talk to the minister about integration but said Islam prohibited contact with women outside the immediate family.
"It seems as if integration for Minister Verdonk is something that should lead to people outside of Islam saying how Muslims should practise Islam," he said.
The Netherlands, which is home to almost one million Muslims, or about 6 percent of the population, saw a wave of apparent tit-for-tat attacks on mosques, churches and religious schools after the Van Gogh murder.

Shocked?
Hardly.
Is this not the religion of peace? (sarc)
Traitors within.
I blame the Catholic Church and the Calvinist churches in the Netherlands for completely abdicating from the public sphere.
If these clergy had been doing their jobs we would be reading about Jalil Achmed, the vibrant Christian preacher from Rotterdam who had converted from Islam at age 14, not about Van de Ven.
Deport his ass
where are the jesuits... where ... hello..... knock knock..
his his a native dutch
Geez... the Dutch have been sleeping very heavily if they are just waking up to the evil that is Radical Islam and which they have naively let metastasize in their country.
Lessee now, past perfect is used for an action having ended in the past. Got it.

That's a death sentence in the ROP.
Liberals SHOULD despise Islam, because it goes against everything they stand for (or SAY that they stand for).
Islam is anti-woman, anti-gay, anti-premarital sex, anti-alcohol, anti-drugs, anti-abortion, anti-democracy, anti-free speech. All over the world, Muslims are killing people for the color of their skin or their religion.
Yet, liberals are allied with Islam and will hear no criticism of Islam. It just shows that liberals' only overriding principle is America-hatred and Jew-hatred. If you hate America and hate Jews, you can get away with anything in liberal eyes.
Poor Dutch- First they come to your country, then they want to kill you. Go figure.
Now they're shocked. What a joke.
This situation in the Netherlands really clarifies a weird encounter I had a few years ago.
I was working as an offshore surveyor in Houston. Because of the nature of work (geomatics background, travel etc) a lot of our employees were Canadian and European. Right after 9/11 they, of course were shocked, but eventually they settled into the predictable, "Americans act like terrorism is something new" or "You reap what you sow" type BS.
One night, right before I left the country, I was talking to a fellow employee from the Netherlands. We hadn't talked extensively since I had worked there but somehow 9/11 came up. He basically said, "That was outrageous what heppened, but it doesn't surprise me. Something has to be done about the way that culture interacts with others".
It shocked me (although I agreed) that a European would have such a reasonable assessment of the situation. Of course I was unaware that this had been festering in that country for awhile now.
Wishing for the death of a politician. What does that remind you of? How about all those leftists who have openly wished for the death of President Bush?
Muslims and Communists. Strange allies in the fight to destroy western civilization.
You really wonder where the great liberals of old, like Adam Smith, disappeared...
Duh!
They might want to rethink the whole moral relativism/population control game they imposed on themselves while allowing unrestrained immigration from non-European/non-Christian barbaric regions.
Prayer might be a good place to start...
