Before 9-11 the US was on a path to becoming very close to Russia. Don't forget that Condi is fluent in Russian and is a Slavic scholar. Over the next 30 to 50 years it is very important that the US become close to Russia and that Russia regain much of its former power to offset the evil that the EU under the leadership of the French will attempt to do.

i agree that it's important to limit the EU's power and influence wherever possible, but I'm not sure I'd trust Russia too much. You used the word hegemony in post 13, to me this has a negative connotation to it. I prefer that neither the EU or Russia are in that position. How much of "Russia's former power" would you like to see the country regain?

Not because I do not see the USA as a great power and like Russia so much. But because we have people here in the USA and on this foreum who really believe the EU is a great group of nations and can be trusted. They are called democrats and Russia haters.
