Suspect says hunters provoked him

Vang says he was surrounded, called names and shot at before shootings

By JOHN DIEDRICH, LEE BERGQUIST and TOM HELD jdiedrich@journalsentinel.com Posted: Nov. 23, 2004

Hayward - The suspect arrested for shooting eight hunters, killing six of them, says he was surrounded by the group, called derogatory racial names and shot at before he opened fire, according to court records released today.

His account differs sharply from details released Monday by the Sheriff's Department and from the accounts from some of the victims, who describe an essentially unprovoked shooting rampage by Chai Soua Vang, a 36-year-old Hmong man from St. Paul, Minn.

Vang, a truck driver, is suspected in the slayings of six hunters and the wounding of two others, according to a probable cause determination signed by Judge Norman L. Yackel here this morning.

Vang is being held on $2.5 million cash bail.

Officials said the Wisconsin Attorney General's Office will prosecute the case, because of its scope and complexity.

Meanwhile, The two survivors continued to improve, officials said.

Terry Willers, the first hunter shot who was hit in the neck, was upgraded from serious to fair at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield today.

Lauren Hesebeck, 48, was released from the hospital Monday night before 9 p.m. He was shot in the shoulder.

Theresa Hesebeck, also the sister of Denny Drew, who died Monday night, said the family was trying to regroup on Tuesday morning and that her husband was recovering at home.

"Your place is at home at a time like this," she said.

The couple have a blended family that includes seven children.

David Drew, a brother of Denny Drew, said Tuesday he was trying to come to grips with the death of his brother and close friends.

A prayer vigil is set for 7 tonight at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Haugen, where three of the victims lived.

Complete coverage of this story will appear online later today and in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in the morning.

It is just as wrong to attribute virtue to an entire people just because you had a good experience with one of them as it is to denigrate an entire people because you had a bad experience with one. This guy is a violent thug. Capice, paisan?

I'd agree with everything you said except the last sentence -- we don't have enough evidence. In either case, you are absolutely correct, just because he's Hmong doens't mean he should be virtuous, nor does it make him evil

My experience with Hmong is that they did not become Christians until they got to America or shortly before.

What I did quote was from books. Since you have had first hand experience, I will bow to your superior knowledge on the Hmongs conversion to Christianity.

I've had Hmongs work for me as long ago as the late 1970s. While it's true they are victimized somewhat by the welfare pimp crowd (Lutheran Social Services is one) and know a lot of angles, they certainly are not an 'indigestible' minority. They frequently set up their own businesses, get higher education, and want to be successful. Youth gangs are a problem not unique to Hmong.

The Hmongs and the Montangards were just a people to be used, in the minds of the politicians. Our Special Forces troops had a much higher opinion of these asian hill billies.

Maybe you've never seen a tree stand. One cannot be 'pushed and shoved' off it.

Depends on who built the tree stand. I've been in a couple treestands you could dance in, they were that big.

well if you don't know... most hunters use bolt action rifles... thus, it will not eject a round.. and it will hold the empty ihn the rifle...

I hunt in the midwest and many carry lever action carbine and automatic Remingtons. From my experience the bolt rifles are more popular out west where the longer shots require a bolt for more accuracy.

Experienced hunters with rifles and scopes at close range missed? I doubt it.

You must not get out much. I've done it and I've been hunting and shooting 40 sumpin years. My old man who taught me how to shoot has missed also along with many skilled hunters I know. Heat of the moment excitement, misjudging the range, target moving at last moment. Murphy bites us hunters also.

Deer often feed at night and move just before dawn and just before sunset. Mid day you are not hunting unless the deer are moving during the rut which is still seldom mid day, so you are relaxing or checking other areas for tracks or sign..

I've killed my biggest deer during mid day during the rut. Same for many buddies I hunt with. It's one of the best times to hunt since most are back at camp stuffing their faces. THe urge to breed will have deer running all over creation during the DAY and night. I also film for a living and this is the best time to catch the big bucks who normally are nocturnal and rarely seen except for game trail cameras.

As far as trespassing, I can think of two instances where I was given bad info by a landowner or the property line (fence) wasn't marked well and I ended up on the wrong property. One landowner was nice about it and I apologized and moved. The other guy was pissed and I could understand since I've run people off our farm several times. Glad they didn't shoot 1st as some here recommend or call me a poacher. I try and do the same when contacting the trespassers on our farm. firm but not overly aggresive towards them.

The taking the scope off first also has me wondering. Maybe one of them fine (cheapo)BSA scopes that had the reticle fall over sideways? I wouldn't want to fight CQ with a scope on my rifle, open sights would be better option IMO.
