Motown Madness a group effort (a different take on the Ron Artest NBA Detroit affair)
The Orange County Register ^ | November 23, 2004 | Mark Whicker

Posted on 11/23/2004 10:16:44 AM PST by EveningStar

If nobody had thrown anything at Ron Artest while he was sunning himself on the scorer's table Friday night, nothing would have happened.

The NBA would have yawned and fined Artest for slugging Ben Wallace needlessly at the end of an Indiana victory and maybe fined and suspended Wallace for shoving Artest practically out to the sideline.

Just another day in the thug life. The Pistons and Pacers know no other way to play each other, and neither did the old Pistons and Bulls, and neither did the old Heat and Knicks.

It was much worse in the '50s, when everyone rode buses and trains and smoked cigarettes and drank six-packs in the locker room.

How can anyone respect a league that demands its players be allowed to smoke pot.

This Pacer team had and has a chance to be really special With the addition of Jackson as a reliable third scorer at shooting guard which Miller is no longer able to give them. As pissed-off as they are gonna be when they get their team back I say to the rest of the NBA: "bring your extra special sneakers when you play the Pacers when they are complete."

"...that Artest was hit in the head by a quarter thrown from the stands in the Eastern Conference finals at Detroit last year."

Well, a nickel I could see, but a quarter... this means WAR!

You can take the boy out of the gang, but until you take the gang out of the boy, he does not qualify to play professional sports.

Actually, the Pistons come out as a winner. The Pacers are their primary competition in the East. Now the Pacers are gutted for a large part of the season, making it easier for the Pistons to repeat as champs of the East.

All this talk about what? Thug-boy isn't going to take home 5 extra-large? My heart bleeds. The fans are out of control? Simple, fans stay home, no NBA, no multi-million dollar thugs anymore. Problem solved.

It's happening in other sports? They aren't essential either. Who really needs them? Would you survive if they weren't there? Would you survive without Hollywood. Yes. You would survive. Theres always something else to enjoy out there. Its a big world.

Artest did foul Wallace but that is a basketball move

A foul is a "basketball move," but a HARD FOUL is actionable by a technical foul.

Artest should have been assessed a technical for the hard foul; Wallace should have been given a technical for the retaliation.

Artest should have been given a second technical, or been tossed from the game for lying on the scorers table. That spot is off limits. What he did there, in and of itself, was also out of line.

And given that, along with everything else, then yes, I'd say that the six-game suspension for Wallace is in line as far as punishment is concerned.

Wallace did not send Artest barrelling into the crowd like a bull in a china shop, fists swinging.

Artest was at work. He was on the job. He was on the clock.

If you or I or anyone else were on the clock, and hauled off and slugged a paying customer, we'd be in the unemployment line, and rightfully so.

Artest ought to be thankful that he isn't in that position and shut the hell up.
