Paper Drops 'Asian' Malkin, Too Anti-Liberal

Norfolk's Virginian-Pilot is dropping columnist Michelle Malkin because, according to the paper's editorial board, she's an "Asian Ann Coulter" whose columns are too "anti-liberal" and "seemingly mean-spirited."

Responding to a reader's complaint about the conservative scribe, the paper's public editor, Marvin Lake, announced on Monday that "she's outta here."

In quotes cover by Editor & Publisher, Lake explained that the Virginian-Pilot's editorial board had concluded Malkin was "too stridently anti-liberal" and that readers objected to her "seemingly mean-spirited rantings and suggested that she be dropped." Malkin's meticulously researched columns have covered a variety of topics, including exposing Sen. Robert Byrd as a Ku Klux Klan sympathizer years after he formally left the organization, and warning how America's failed immigration system has left the country vulnerable to another terrorist attack.

Malkin has also authored two landmark books and immigration and the Japanese internment during World War II.

Still, editorial writer Don Luzzatto was unimpressed, telling Lake: "I was really put off by her penchant for name-calling and ad hominem attack. I think we can do much better.”

Virginian-Pilot editorial board member Bronwyn Lance Chester went so far as to invoke Malkin's race.

"She’s an Asian Ann Coulter. . . . She says outrageous things just to get TV appearances and book deals. She’s the worst of what’s wrong with punditry today. She adds absolutely nothing to genuine political discourse.”

Just for the record -- The Virginia-Pilot is based in Norfolk, not Fairfax County. I think there is a very different demographic in the Tidewater area than in Fairfax.

They used to give Pulitzer Prizes for reporting like that, back when the Pulitzer meant something.

Today, and "exposè" in High Times on which Hawaiian island produces the tastiest herb is more likely to win.

wonder if the same standards will apply to their choice of political cartoonists, most of who love to skewer GW.

They carry Molly Ivins or Maureen Dowd? Same thing...

With a circulation of under 200,000 not too big of a deal.

"...mean-spirited."

Please!!! That's what was said about Reagan. When the commentary and assessment by Conservatives gets too close to home, Liberals like to call them 'mean spirited'. Oh brother, time to grow up.

If she adds nothing to genuine political discourse, then the liberals aren't liberals.

Liberals instead of refuting what she has to say with opposing "genuine political discourse", attack her and those like her with misogynist or racist comments. Just your typical Liberalism run amok.

It's news to me that she's "Asian."

Yeah, probably Turkish or Russian from beyond the Urals.

reminds me of the Ben Stiller role from The Cable Guy where he's on the stand and his character, Sam Sweet, tells police that the attackers were Asian...

"They were speaking...AAAAsian"

"Bronwyn Lance Chester" got a problem with Asian chicks?

I'll bet "Bronwyn Lance Chester" is a regular guy, just like his fellow elitist, "John Forbes Kerry".

"She’s an Asian Ann Coulter."

This newspaper is a disgrace. You see little pissant publications like this all over the place. They are usually nothing more than stepping stones for wannabe "journalists" who are fresh off the college paper, and last-stop refuges for mediocre never-weres who couldn't hack it in the big city.... Baltimore.

Norfolk is a Navy town and I cannot imagine how these liberal idiots at the paper can hang onto their readers.

Correct, Fairfax County is in the District, whereas Norfolk is further downstate.

Petite, beautiful, and outspoken Michelle Malkin has once again proven that she has more testosterone happening than the eunuchs in the media.

She's just too tough for you, eh boys? Gotta shut her down.

(I can't type the word I'm thinking.)
