The MSM and the Mediots (even on fox) tried to represent it unheard of that a semi-automatic SKS was used in hunting. There were guests who quickly correcte the misinformation.

(I still found out the better and more accurate information on FR faster than any other news source.)

BTW any more info on the shooter?

Golly....I got the impression that LOTS of folks hunt with the SKS! One of my own sons is going to be using one ASAP as a matter of fact! From my experience with it, I'd have nothing against using it for hunting either!..... although I have to admit, I do favor my Rem M-700 .243. :-)

I haven't heard anymore about the shooter so far. I think once the blogosphere debunks all the fluff about this evil "assault rifle", they'll drop this like a hot potato.

Even Fox is calling the SKS an "Assault Weapon" in the crawl under the picture. We need a minor FReep to set them straight.

Yeah...this is definitely in need of Freeping.

I suppose this nutjob shot these people from an Assault Tree Stand.... and that he used his special Assault Boots...and that he was wearing Assault Gloves and an Assault Hat and of course lets not forget the Assault Jacket!!!

...and the SKS is a PARTICULARLY deadly weapon, which is exactly why our U.S. Marine Corps snipers use them regularly! (insert sarcasm here). It's also why the Russians still issue them to their regular army ((insert MORE sarcasm here). Heck, that rifle is SOOO deadly that our own military is considering dropping all current and future small arms development and just issuing SKSs to ALL of our soldiers!...r-i-g-h-t...

I'll bet that this guy could have actually climbed OUT of that tree stand and left that evil SKS up there and it would have SHOT all of these people by itself! ...because we all KNOW that guns kill people!....ESPECIALLY ASSAULT WEAPONS!

What a farce. We're lucky to keep rounds on paper (8.5 x 11") at 300 yards with our SKSs. But we've got two rifles (Rem M-700, .243, and a Mauser chambered for the .30-06) that shoot .3" groups (yeah...that's three tenths of one inch) at 300 yards. There's a GOOD reason our snipers use rifles like these and NOT that SKS.

Most state games laws specify that a five round magazine be fixed to the rifle for hunting. Does anybody know if this was fitted to his rifle?

I plan on using my Kalishnikov to hunt for javelina this season. (A javelina is a mean toothy piglike critter that lives in the southwest.) My friend is bringing his AR-15. We both have 5 round mags, which makes them no different than any other semi-auto hunting rifle.

I've got a cousin who went javelina hunting years ago, and they ended up hunting HIM! They chased him into a Prickly Pear patch, and in the end he was (relatively) unharmed.

You might put a five round mag in your AK, but I'll "betcha" that you keep a 30 rounder in your back pocket! :-)

The latest report is he has no convictions, although the cops were called to his address on a domestic situation a couple of times.

I'm going to check with Game & Fish, but I recall that it's against the law to posess a hi-cap mag while you are hunting. I'll for sure be carrying an extra 5 rd mag or 2 with me, and also carry a sidearm with some high-power hollowpoint rounds.

Javelina are mean critters, but if 3 guys with rifles and sidearms can't put down a few on the attack... then I figure we probably deserve to get gored, just for being such bad shots. :)

Add to your list (Post #17) the woman cutting off her baby's arms in Texas, claiming postpartum depression.

Article (link in Post #11) says the perp had "multiple run ins with Twin Cities Law enforcement". In other words, he's been trouble for a long time, but nobody has put him away. He was a loose cannon waiting to explode.

Let me be the first to say that this shows the importance of assault weapons. 8 guys with scoped rifles are outgunned by one man with a junk SKS.

No wonder every military on the planet arms most of their troops with self-loading rifles.

And when some folks say "we don't need battle rifles to defend liberty, because I am a crack shor with my scoped sniper rifle", we can just point to this incident and ask how good bolt rifles are against one man with an SKS.

Of course, the real problem is that the victims never shifted mental state into combat, probably just wondering what the heck is going on, and not considering shooting back.

Yes, it's not against the law in AZ to carry a sidearm for self-defense while hunting (don't know about our more socialist Nordic states). Many hunters in southern Arizona carry pistols because of all the border crossing drug smugglers and other invaders. It's not uncommon for Border Patrol to stop hunters and ask for intel or for hunters to report suspicious activity or stumble across unmanned drop sites. I imagine any decent caliber handgun with hollow points would be effective medicine for a pigrat that is right on top of you. In close quarters a handgun can definitely be a lot "handier". Happy trails...

This is the crux, and a fine example of the importance of situational awareness and being able to move rapidly through the OODA loop that fighter pilots train for. In a rapidly escalating situation the sequence of Observe, Orient, Decide, Act always puts the defender at a disadvantage because the attacker is already in Act mode. For hunters, gunfire isn't necessarily a threatening input, and no doubt the Orient and Decide phase was too slow. Damn shame as this will be used to disparage both hunting and semi-autos among the sheeple.

I'm almost CERTAIN that it's illegal to carry anything over a 5 round mag when hunting! I would definitely check though. :-)

I was going to suggest a good hangun for Javelina!...just in case. We used to hunt in an area where wild (feral) dogs were a PROBLEM. We carried handguns there (VA), and were glad we did once or twice!

I had read somewhere that only one of the people who arrived at the scene had a rifle with him. They converged expecting a hunting accident, not an active threat with a rifle.

He chased them down over a distance of 200 yards - it appears they were fleeing because they were unarmed.

This doesn't say anything about the relative merits of bolt action vs. semi auto. Just that most of us don't expect to encounter unalloyed evil as we're going about our daily business.

Just heard on the newsbreak on Rush's show the reason given for his shooting the hunters was he was called "racially derogatory" names.

Can't wait to see what he does to his 300 pound, weightlifting, mass-murderer boyfriend in prison.

It is... I'm going to call G & F to see if it's legal to carry a larger magazine in your vehicle for 'just in case' - just not on your person.

Also to find out if you can carry a sidearm with a hi-cap mag for self defense if you are only using the rifle w/ 5 rds for hunting.

>>>I don't agree with your assessment of this <<<
>>> The sheriff stated that people hunting with his party have used an SKS in the past.<<<

Doesn’t this prove my point!

Besides being a professional law enforcement officer and the top sheriff in the county.
He should know what a SKS is. And it’s capacity. A off the rack model is a top loading weapon similar to many bolt action rifles. Or a M1.
And he should know that a SKS would not have been affected by the AWB.
If it’s a evil assault rifle then so is a M1, M1A, Browning BARs, .........

My condolences to you and your employees;(

Chai Soua Vang, 36, who lives on St. Paul's East Side, was arrested in connection with the multiple shootings of hunters in western Wisconsin today. He is being held in the Sawyer (Wis.) County Jail.

Actually Ladysmith2, I was referring to the county. Where it has more than 16,000 people. Not a very big county. Yes, there are probably many towns in that county that consist of 600 or so people in them. Still, it's small, whether you want to say 9,000 or 900. Sawyer County Shootings. will give that info. But if you really want to get technical, the figure that you quoted is a lot lower than what you said. Exeland Township boasts a population of 200 - maybe 300. About 1/2 of what you said. But that's neither here nor there. There are people that are hurting. Prayers go out to the families and survivors. Regardless, it's small enough...period.
