No Charges Imminent After Basketball Brawl
ABC News ^ | November 22, 2004

If charges are filed, they probably would be for assault and battery, a misdemeanor that could bring a three-month jail sentence, said David Gorcyca, the Oakland County prosecutor. The only possible felony charge could be against the person who hurled a chair into the crowd.

Did anyone catch former NBA player Kermit Washington (the same who sucker-punched Rudy Tomjanovich years ago) on Deborah Norville's show tonight? He actually linked the basketbrawl violence to violence in Iraq. He said it was no different because a case was made that we needed to get them before they got us and the basketball players used the same mentality. He then specified the marine who shot the unarmed "assurgent" (as he put it). Norville then said "Woah, I don't think you can make that link to what happened on Friday." He responded "Why not? Violence is shown on TV every day." Yikes! A war zone is the same as a basketball game, Kerm?

I haven't watched basketball for over ten years now -- this is ONE of the reasons why.

Yeah, well, they don't hire those clowns for their intellectual prowess.
They hire them for their pretty faces.

diversity on the basketball court

Yeah - it's time we had more old, uncoordinated, untalented bozos on the court - guys like me - I claim discrimination - THAT's the ticket !!!

Ignorance is BLISS. The very thought that there is a human being on the face of the earth that could equate the FREEING of a NATION of 25 million people and the WAR we are engaged in to keep our Nation and YES.....WESTERN CIVILISATION in tact, to a friggin basketball game, makes me very, very ill.

Kermit Washington did not sucker punch Rudy Tomjonovich. There was a fight, Kermit was standing next to two other players involved in the fight.Rudy came running from the Rockets bench. He may have been coming to join the fight or to help break it up. Kermit punched him right in the face, face to face. A sucker punch is when you hit someone without them seeing you, usually in the back or by surprising them around a blind corner. That said Kermit made some pretty stupid statements tonight.

I'm not surprised which side Washington selected. What worries me more is that black commentators are siding with the players, unanimously as far as I can tell.

If this turns into a racist thing, the NBA is done.

The Artest formally known as an NBA player should be sentenced to six months of community service, starting now....to be performed in the holy city of Najaf.

Well I guess when Kermit sees a punch (O'Neal on the ball boy) that is unbelievably reminicent of his face breaking punch on Rudy Tomjonovich he has an interesting choice.

A. Apologize AGAIN for being the original NBA thugballer.
B. Come up with a scapegoat.

He chose B. Screw him.

If anybody should be charged it is the NBA and the teams in general

They let the crowds become more and more abusive and the beer sales bring in the $$$$

Security is a joke

Players are just supposed to let people throw beer in their faces and let SECURITY deal with the fans

Security is really right on top of things in the NBA

Just what the hell do you need beer for at an athletic event

I can see why Artest is upset. So far his fellow St. John's basketball player,Jason Williams got off for killing his driver with a shotgun at point-blank range. They really turn them out at St. John's.

This decision is worse than the fracas. What kind of message does this send to the youth of America?

Punch anyone even on national tv and we will not prosecute!

There won't be any charges....but be prepared for a drive-by! Gang-bangers have no place in basketball.

I used to think that you couldn't get sucker punched face
to face.............until this very afternoon. I got clocked
in the chin by a twelve year old, a big twelve year old but
still, a pre-teen. The left side of my chin is swollen and
sore. Never thought a 12 yr old could punch like that.

My co-worker and I grabbed and restrained the kid, immedi-
ately going to the floor. One hell of a struggle. A 15yr old
stormed up and threatened to kick us in our heads. I was
screaming "Get him outta here, NOW!"

My only solace was that later, my co-worker told me of
the look of shear fear on the kid's face when, instead of
going down, I looked at him w/the 'evil eye' after the punch.

Sorry for the rant but in my mind I got sucker punched face
to face. I think that the punch from behind is actually
called the "Sunday punch".
