This from some research:

The maximum beneficial effect may take months of continuous use to develop. Likewise, beneficial effects may take days or weeks to wear off when a psychotropic drug is discontinued. Therefore, an ill person who, against medical advice, stops taking medication, may not have an immediate relapse.

Side effects of psychotropic drugs can occur early in drug therapy or may not appear until after months, or occasionally years, of drug use. Some side effects, especially many of the ones that appear early, are temporary and may go away or become less severe after a few weeks. Most side effects are related to drug dose; the higher the dose, the worse the side effect
