If your "red-blue" map is broken down by county, not just by state, then the contrasts are even more stark:
Even in states like Kalifornicate, that went overwhelmingly for Kerry, the Kerry counties are a relative minority.
Look at a county-by-county map of New York: does that state look like a liberal bastion, or does it merely seem to contain a liberal bastion - New York City?
NY, PA, CA, and MI would all be red without their largest city.
Even in Wisconsin, the majority of the state was red.
