Posted on 11/22/2004 11:24:46 AM PST by Visioneer
Any word on USDA findings about the possible mad cow discovered somewhere in the U.S. recently?
With the holidays ahead, I sure would like to know something.

With Thanksgiving on Thursday, I'm more concerned with Mad Turkey Disease.

None of the meat or by-products from the cow made it into commerce. Eat hardy.

It's not as widespread as the media purports it to be. It's completely under control. Happy Holidays and enjoy yourself.

To: Visioneer
Sure.. You're more likely to get killed by eating ham (tapeworm), turkey (All the turkeys were tested for campylobacter and salmonella, two common bacteria that can cause foodborne illnesses with symptoms ranging from headache and fever to nausea and diarrhea. None of the turkeys tested positive for salmonella; 28 percent of fresh turkeys and 4 percent of frozen turkeys had campylobacter. Last year, 90 percent of the turkeys CPSI tested had campylobacter and 18 percent had salmonella.), green onions (Hepatitis A), olives (choking hazard).
So, yes, by all means, be worried about some angry cow. Or better yet, cook your food that you buy from a grocer that you trust; you'll be a lot safer that way.

Abyone was found to be related to Obi Wan. The mad cow was found to be related to Teresa Heinz.

Thanks Misplaced...My concern is this...
Let's assume for a minute that the test results are, G*d forbid, positive.
Even if this particular cow did not make it into the nation's food supply, will our government be able to backtrack this particular cow's history to the extent that we can be guaranteed that NO OTHER COWS that have crossed paths with the infected one are (1) healthy and (2)also not in the food supply if the answer to #1 is "No".
Just concerned....

I used to work for USDA. There is very little chance you can contract Mad Cow Disease in this country. The way meat is slaughtered was changed to prevent spread of Mad Cow.
Even if a contaminated cow got in the system, it would probably have no effect. But if it did no one would notice, as you sound a little nutty anyway. ;-)
Turkey has no mad cow, but you can get Salmonella from it.
Veggies can have liver flukes or tapeworms. If you go in certain rivers in Asia you might pick up Shistosomiasis and Malaria is rampant in Haiti. No worries, mate.
