Welcome Newcomers! This Sandbox is devoted to giving you a place to practice basic HTML, and to get some coaching.
So, first things first:
Go to michigander's [ HTML Bootcamp (Cyber patriot training)] and learn there how to change font color, font size, font face, and the like.
THERE'S A WEALTH OF INFORMATION THERE NOT COVERED HERE (so as to avoid duplication).
Learn there also how to post a link and an image, then come back here to practice.
If you're having problems, folks will drop by occasionally to give you pointers and help you troubleshoot.
Boring posts are a crime . . .
So practice here first!
NEWCOMERS TIP: I just reread the FreeRepublic posting guidelines. They're worth a read by all newcomers [click here].
Following is an excellent previous post by Willie Green
But first, HTML advice from the FreeRepublic help page:
Basic HTML
The Free Republic forum uses standard HTML coding techniques. Use <p> to start new paragraphs. You may use <b> to begin bolding and <center> to center text, but please remember to end these items where appropriate with </b> and/or </center>, etc. If you post links or other advanced coding, be sure to test before posting.
Creating new paragraphs is about the only html that most posters ever need, but if you would like to learn more about html you may use any search engine on the internet to find tutorials. Simply search on "html tutorial". Here are links to a couple tutorials that I found:
The Basics
Paragraphs, Line Breaks and Horizontal Lines
A lengthy article or reply can be very tedious to read if it does not contain some very simple HTML formating. Inserting either of the following codes will make your post much more readable:
- <br> is a line break. Text that follows this code will begin on the next line.
- <p> is a paragraph break. Text that follows this code will begin on a new line after skipping a line.
- <hr> is a horizontal rule. It draws a line across the page like this:
Character Formatting
Simple special effects may be created using Character Formatting Codes. These codes are used in pairs in the format: <?>words to be formatted</?>, where <?> turns the formatting "ON" and </?> turns the formating "OFF".Please: ALWAYS turn "OFF" the formatting when you use it.
Some commonly used codes of this type are:
- <b> and </b> -- BOLD
- <i> and </i> -- Italic
- <u> and </u> -- Underline
- <blink> and </blink> --
- <strike> and </strike> --
Strike - and -- Subscript
- and -- Superscript
- <big> and </big> -- Big text
- <small> and </small> -- Small text
These codes can be "nested" to produce multiple effects at the same time. For instance:
<b><i>Bold and Italic</i></b> produces Bold and Italic
Links
The method for posting a HTML link is fairly simple. The following format is used:
<a HREF="URL">Link Description</a>
where "URL" is the URL address you want to link to (and you gotta use the double quotes), and Link Description is whatever you want to call your link. For example:
<a HREF="http://www.drudgereport.com/">Link to Drudge</a>
becomes Link to Drudge
And another from the same previous post:
<FONT COLOR="COLOR">Sample</FONT> produces colorful text.
"COLOR" is often a Hexidecimal Code for whatever Color you want, but color names are also supported.
Examples:
<FONT COLOR="blue">blue text</font> produces blue text
<FONT COLOR="red">red text</font> produces red text
<FONT COLOR="green">green text</font> produces green text
To: foolproof formatting
Here is an easy way to REMEMBER TO TURN OFF THE FORMATTING.
To be sure I turn off the formatting I TYPE THE "OFF" COMMAND AT THE SAME TIME AS THE "ON" COMMAND.
An example:
I want to respond to a line in a post by another brilliant Freeper.
I type < I >""< /I >< BR>
I then "cut and paste" his remarks between the quotes:
< i>" You are a poopy head "< /I>< BR>
And type my equally brilliant response: "No, you're a poopy head!"
The result:
"You are a poopy head"
No, you're a poopy head!
It's very easy to forget to turn off your formatting!
Yes it is!
To: ftrader, deport
Actually, the <ul> tag is for a bulleted list and stands for unordered list. The missing part is the list item tag (<li>) Here's an example:
<ul>
<li>List item #1
<li>List item #2
<li>List item #3
</ul>
Would display:
- List item #1
- List item #2
- List item #3
Finally . . .
Here's the link for [Webmonkey] (a super HTML training site).

Sure I don't mind.

Try this, right click on the image that isn't showing, then click on show image or view image.
That should bring them out.I did and it worked.

You don't have to say anything about the pics, if they don't load and people don't know what to do you can tell them.
Most people that have been around here for a while understand and know what to do.
Go ahead and post the story and don't worry about it..
You are doing everything correct.

Just went back to 184 and the two pics are NOT showing up now...what do I do? Actually that shouldn't be too hard to fix, I think.
But I'm getting ready to head out for the day shortly, so I'll have to
deal with it tomorrow. I'll figure it out. :^)

Picture from 1916 |
The history of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle began in Milwaukee in 1903. In Milwaukee, Bill Harley and Arthur Walter Davidson developed a one-cylinder motorcycle. Around the turn of the century the gasoline engine was developed and the one-cylinder motor was introduced. In 1901 the Indians were the first motorcycles and in 1903 Mitschell, Merkel and Yale. This motorcycle was initially built for racing and was powered by a one-cylinder gasoline combustion engine. |
In 1903 in Milwaukee, Bill Harley and Arthur Walter Davidson developed a one-cylinder motorcycle. It was a reliable and even a beautiful cycle. And ... someone bought it !! In 1905 they had made 11 motorcycles, in 1908 it were 154 and ... they had a company, in a little wooden barn, that was build by Davidson's father. The small company extended quickly and another member of the Davidson family, William, joined them. In no time they hired about 20 employees in an especcially build stone-factory.
In 1909 Bill Harley made a project of the first 1000 CC V-Twin. It produced a modest seven horsepower. The 45-degree V-twin would become one of the more recognizable images of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. This V-Twin stayed with HD for a long, long time. Maybe it's hard to believe, but Harley-Davidson didn't invent the V-twin !! When Bill Harley developed one, he just followed the tendency of the time. |
|
Arthur & Walter Davidson, William S. Harley and William A Davidson (1915) |
1910 brought the legendary "Bar and Shield" logo that was placed on their motorcycle. This would become the defining symbol of Harley-Davidson to this day. Numerous first place winnings in races, endurance contests and hill climbs give Harley-Davidson more recognition. The "F-head" engine is introduced in 1911. It will be the power workhorse until 1929, when the "Flathead" engine is introduced. |
The year 1912 saw further growth of the Harley-Davidson Company. Construction began on a new 6-story factory. Harley-Davidson also became an exporter this year and their first overseas sale was made in Japan. In the states there were now over 200 dealerships.
1914 saw the addition on the sidecar to the Harley-Davidson. The Company also formally put their hand in the ring of motorcycle racing this year and would soon dominate the sport and become known as the "Wrecking Crew".
1915 saw the emergence of the three-speed sliding-gear transmission. In 1917, one-third of all Harley-Davidsons were sent overseas to the U.S. Military to fulfill their patriotic call and to aid in the war effort. The following year, roughly half of the motorcycles produced were sold to the U.S. military. In the end, about 20,000 motorcycles were used in the war, most of them Harley-Davidsons. By this time Harley-Davidson was the biggest motorcycle factory in the world with nearly 2,000 dealerships worldwide. |
The F-Twin "Silent Gray Fellow" from 1915 was called that way due to its color and its silent motor

Thanks guys;
Meekie I just reposted it from the email and it looks like everything came up--I think I'll listen to Mayor and just post as is--what happens, happens.
I don't know enough about what is going on and do not want to drive either of you crazy in case I need help in the future!
Have a great weekend both and I will too!
