Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004 11:32 p.m. EST Hillary Eyeing Immigration as Top 2008 Issue

More than any other leader of either political party, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton has been focusing on the issue of immigration reform and border security - taking hard-line positions that appeal to frustrated Republicans in a move that could guarantee her enough red state support to win the White House in 2008.

On Wednesday, as the media descended on Little Rock to cover the opening of her husband's presidential library, Sen. Clinton criticized the Bush administration for not using advanced technology to improve border security.

There's less to be seen here than meets the eye.

In the story, she's for an entry/exit system, which is already underway under GWB and has been for two years.

She's for a "visa ID", which I thought used to be called "a passport."

She proposes a national ID, which most conservatives would oppose.

She's for "advanced technology" at the borders, which is vague enought to sound good.

She's basically filling in the cracks on GWB's proposals, which unfortunately isn't difficult to do since the WH has been so whimpy on the issue.

As one who walked his wife through 5 years of INS hell, I think the only rational steps are to pursue the 3/6 year worker visa; immediately deport those who don't qualify; get extremely tough on those who then employ illegals; and make improvements in port security technology. Also implement the scofflaw database in NCIC (which Ashcroft announced in Nov 2001)and force local PDs to follow federal enforcement. Finally, ICE deportation policies need to be dramatically tightened, which GWB could mandate with the stroke of his pen tomorrow (though required by the USSC, administrative due process procedures are under the purview of the exec branch).

I'd vote for the Devil himself if he was promising to seal the borders - at least he would be making promises, no one is doing even that much.

I am not stupid, and it is likely that Hillary will largely renege on her promises, but I dont care. The situation is THAT desperate and the national Republican leadership simply doesnt get it.

Maybe I'll just right the Devil's name in myself, heh.

This whole thing will be phony if she gets elected.

Bingo.

Illegal immigrants? Bad. Wipe 'em out.

Undocumented laborers? Bring 'em in. Stop racist Republican persecution of migrants of color. Give 'em their voting rights.

It all depends on what the meaning of is, is.

Her ugliness could spend the next three years personally patroling the borders and she still wouldn't get any more red state's votes! These people just don't get it!!

That's an interesting position.

I've even given you several examples in #21 above that she's not even making any promises. Just the ususal Hitlery vapidisms with no content or substance.

I'm surprised that you'd be taken-in by such a well-known liar. Are you from New York?

"The nomination is a lock."

Hillary may be the personal favorite of the Democrat primary voters, but if the polls in three years show that someone else has a significantly better chance at winning, the primary voters will hold their noses and vote for the person best able to defeat retake the White House.

I don't have a crystal ball but I doubt that early polls will show a movement of conservatives or evangelicals to Hillary. But they will show Bill Richardson getting most of the Hispanic vote, maybe 80% or better.

Early polls will show that Richardson has enough Hispanic vote to block the election of any Republican, whereas Hillary will still be just a good chance.

Ain't gonna happen.

As if that matters in Iowa or New Hampshire. Good grief.

Point is, Hillary, bringing this otherwise conservative issue up, forces the GOP to likewise discuss it openly during the election cycle. I'll bet anyone a steak dinner, the candidate with the most comprehensive plan to reform immigration wins in 08.

To hell with advanced high tech measures - just put up a fence and spread agents every 5 miles, along with penalizing employers who hire illegals, and take away the benefits. People who immigrate LEGALLY should not be penalized for following the law. There is a low tech solution to this problem - but neither party cares to do anything to stop the invasion.

"Phony, Lying, power-hungry commie. (among other things.)"

All politicians are some of these things at times, even W.

Immigration enforcement is a winning issue. It is a critically important issue.

I will support whomever brings it to the table, democrat or republican - it is a winning conservative issue.

Even if it is self-serving, and even if she is disingenuous, Hillary will be doing her country a great service if she makes this an issue, because other politicians will take notice. I hope she does it.

"I'm surprised that you'd be taken-in by such a well-known liar. Are you from New York?"

I am not 'taken in', but even lying politicians toss their supporters a bone now and then, and I'll take a bone on this issue.

I am from Texas and I saw wages drop by about half in the construction industry in ten years. The places I grew up are taken over by gangs and crime and msot of it illegal Mexican in origin.

The politicians are just prostituting themselves for business money and will do absolutely nothing on immigration while it destroys our country.

So, yeah, I'll take Hillary; I would take Satan if he would make even mere promises too on this matter.

I'm with you on that. This country isn't suffering for a lack of high-tech wizardry. It's suffering from a lack of old-fashioned grit. There's still a lot of it, but we're nowhere near our prime.

Hi! My name is Hillary, and I want your vote.
Friends call me 'Hildebeast' or 'She Devil'
My husband and I ran the country for 8 years
Then, friends just called us 'dumb and dumber'
70 percent of voters want to stop illegal immigration
So I'm going to run for president on this issue.
You can just call me 'Hill'
Will Bush quit enraging his voters when he visits south of the border?
I hope not.
Help me stop the illegals, and help me run to the right of the Republicans.
Please vote for me!

But she is smart enough to say what the people want to hear. She might not do a dam thing once elected but she will say anything to get elected.

Hellary will never be elected P. Nonetheless If the WOT goes bad, maybe a small recession, throw in a RINO running for the GOP in 08 and the killer, a third party cantidate who is a true conservative and vows to do something about the borders, the defecit and the IRS and we might be looking at President lucifer on a broom in 08.
