The C-172 I'm renting out of AVL these days has Bendix/King KAP-140 in the panel, but I haven't learned how to use it to fly an ILS approach yet.

Is 1000 fpm about right for the approach speed of a Gulfstream?

My Gulfstream experience is in the G-1 and have loads of time in Beech 1900's, Dash-8's and a good amount in the BAe-146. 1000' fpm sounds a little high but I'm not sure for a G-2 thru G-5.

I meant by the MSM--I checked all the major news outlets, AP, etc., and the TV cable updates. A Gulfstream going down is bigger news than was accorded. Of course, that it was Bush the Elder's charter explains that.

Yes, coupled approaches (on autopilot) are routine, but you need to have A/C stabilized and in slot to get AP to couple.

This was simple pilot FUBAR, as most accidents are.

Maybe when we hear a little more about their ground track this will make sense...or maybe not.

Thanks for the ping. That plane was going to pancake whether it hit the lightpole or not. Very puzzling.

Nachos Grassius...

Wayyyyy behind on that approach...If that is the preliminary/unnofficial/anonymous NTSB official report...

156 feet on those light standards...hmmmm

Almost looks like they were shooting for the Beltway...

Wonder what you do to learn and apply from this accident???

Sorry for the late response. Just returned from a 6 day Europe trip. EDDF-NY 7-50 flt time at mach .86 ;-0) (G5)

"can't you fly an ILS approach on autopilot in one of these things? And if "yes", is it common to do so?"

You are correct , most of the time ( with the exception being Flight training & Checkrides) it would have been a A/P coupled approach. The G3 is a solid no suprises a$$ kicking rocket. Got approx 1500 hrs in type. Not sure what type of efis/avionics they had. First gen Sperry glass probly. Leadpenny is correct there is now way to sugarcoat human error here ! There by the grace of ...........

That would be on the heavy side, but not uncommon
They could have been carrying extra turbosina for the next leg.

the plane did hit a light pole about a 1/4 mile south of the electrical lines you are talking about. that is why parts of the plane were on the main lanes of the beltway.
if it had missed the light pole it would have hit the electrical tower for sure. i was on my way to work that morning and came upon the crash minutes after it happened.
