Computer Question...
11/21/04 | Myself

Posted on 11/21/2004 9:17:07 PM PST by Cheetah1

I hope I am posting this in the right area :)

I have a web page that SHOULD automatically refresh itself every x number of minutes. It isn't.

I am trying to figure out if there is a setting on my computer that will fix the problem?

I have already gone into options and clicked on automatically check for newer version of web page. This didn't fix the problem though.

The page I am trying to refresh (automatically) works fine at home on my home computer.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

The "refresh" command is a function of the web site - not necessarily your computer.

But that said, the new security measures in windows, especially with javascript, can block refresh/auto forwarding/etc.

What is the web page address?

what you do is go to the home page and click on general/chat and post there.

Try F5 to refresh. It's the latest versions of IE, as I understand it, that will cache (save) your viewed pages, so that when you hit refresh, it pulls up the saved page rather than "hogging bandwidth." Did you Google you problem?

When you want to refresh the page just hit the F5 key. that's even better than waiting for it to refresh on its own.

Thanks...

The web page address is

The problem seems to be with java? I think.

You might also try:

In your browser, go to Tools --> Internet Options --> Settings and see what you have checked.

Looking at the source code of the main page at drudgereport.com, I see a meta tag in the HTML which says (with a couple of extra spaces):

< META HTTP-EQUIV="refresh" content="240" >

This means the page will refresh every 240 seconds (or 4 minutes).

Add this code to the top of your web page:

<meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="60;url=http://the.url.of.your.web.page">

NOTE: change the '60' to however many seconds you want the auto-refresh.

It shows no error, but it does NOT refresh either.

Try this and see if it works ----

Warning large moving radar file

Firefox also has a tab exstention that will let you set the refresh time of each tab. And many other handy features .

Actually, what I need is a script that will change the form input and convert it with hex codes and return it with macrons!

Web pages that auto-refresh usually insert rotating ads on the page, like Drudge Report does. They can also refresh data like web cams, market watch, news headlines, etc.

If you have any pop-up and/or ad blocker software installed, then these pages may be prevented from refreshing. Ad-Aware is one such program & it keeps the FR 'pager' from opening. I always have to turn it off if I want to be notified of new pings or new e-mail to me while on FR.

Other settings, like Windows java may also affect this.

Good Luck.

If you are the one coding the page, please reconsider including that bit of "refresh" javascript. It's really insulting to users to tell them they're too stupid to refresh the page on their own, and that you'll need to do it for them. And on slower connections, the page starts refreshing before it's fully loaded....

If you're not the person designing that page ... um, then never mind....

Did you try going to your "Internet Settings" ( IE browser ) and adding the address to "trusted sites" ?

In the tools, intertnet options menu, click security, custom, and make sure meta refresh is enabled on the computer that should be reloading.

not related to this specific issue.... but I have a PC (HP) that seems to run the fan(s) only when it restarts from "hibernate." Or they seem to run really loud when it wakes up, since I'm sure at least one fan is runing at all times

maybe its a windows thing, maybe a HP thing...

anyone have ideas? (besides buy a mac)

thanks
