It was such Dutch tolerance, pragmatism and guilt about the country's colonial past that allowed hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Muslim Indonesia (a Dutch colony from the 17th century until World War II) to flood into tiny Holland. Today, Muslims are a majority among children under 14 in the Netherlands' four largest cities.

There are 1 million Muslims (6 percent of the population) now living in Europe's most crowded small country. Some 30,000 new Muslims arrive every year. They tend to live among themselves, with their own schools, mosques and restaurants. Most are horrified by what they view as sacrilegious in their own religion. Their imams speak no Dutch and know nothing of the Netherlands' history and culture.

Don't forget those millions of "moderate Muslims" who only contribute funding for the violence. These "moderate Muslims" don't directly commit the violence. Muslims would like us suckers to notice that difference.

Our self-critical nature is a two-edged sword. It allows us to discuss social and economic problems openly, the debate being a prelude to reform. On the other hand, we are open as well to the idea that Western civilization itself is a failure. Too often we forget Locke's dictum that a tolerant society must never tolerate intolerance.

Western Europe as a whole gets about half a million new Muslims a year. Most make their way from sub-Saharan and North Africa, illegal immigrants smuggled by boat to Spain and Italy where they are free to travel with impunity to the rest of Europe. Thus, Europe's Muslim population has doubled to 20 million in the last 10 years.

Chilling if true. Small wonder the crazies actually believe they can win this war. They live in an isolated world of superstition, actual fear of the scientific method, unreality and victimhood (sound familiar) and believe that they can prevail if they can get a nuke or a virus. They just might be right.

Western civilization is destined to fail if it is based on ideas like this. We must never tolerate intolerance? Intolerance of what? Do we get to pick and choose? Intolerance of intolerance is itself intolerance. This kind of black and white dictum cannot be applied to such a gray concept

Why would anyone want to integrate into Dutch society, muslim or otherwise?

I know this is difficult to believe, since we hear nothing about Holland that does not involve potsmoking or prostitutes, but Holland is full of wonderful families who lead happy, loving, productive lives. Believe me, most of the Dutch people do not spend all their time buying the services of harlots in the red-light district of Amsterdam. It is nowhere near so usual in Holland for women (even childless women) to work as it is here, so Dutch children get a lot of face-time with Mom. The Dutch have many charming customs and a warm family life. If you can deal with their sometimes shocking tendency to bluntness, they can be delightful friends. Of course a normal person living in Holland would want to integrate into Dutch society with all its rich heritage of history, art, architecture, and country living.
