Security protocols are established and coordinated well in advance of the visit..This was either a screw-up by some of the Chileans, or something more sinister. It's being investigated. IMHO, I believe the USSS agent acted in error, possibly egregiously. When he was confronted, and struggled, he took himself out of position to protect the President. Wha he shoudl have done, when his access was blocked, was stop, stand still, and loudly call out.."Mr President, please do NOT enter the room sir.."
The President had already entered the room.
He was marvelous the way he strode back and TOOK COMMAND.
Our COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF!
That's what he does. Takes COMMAND.
I want to know why the agent(s) were far enough away from the President to be separated from him.
This whole incident has me very concerned.
From what I can tell from the pictures, he had a badge which I'm guessing gave him the clearance needed
When he was confronted, and struggled, he took himself out of position to protect the President. Wha he shoudl have done, when his access was blocked, was stop, stand still, and loudly call out.."Mr President, please do NOT enter the room sir.."
I understand your point about the struggle .. but his job is to stay with the President and I can understand the agent struggling to get to the President ..
Yes, as I read this thread, you are the first poster I see to highlight presidential security protocol procedures, the 214th post. I was wondering when someone would bring it up. :)
This was either a screw-up by some of the Chileans
The most likely answer.
It's being investigated.
Of Course.

A revision for the SS regulations.
From the pictures I saw, the USSS was blocked and being held. The only way for him to alert the President was to make the commotion. This did alert the President who came back. I do believe that this threw off the assassins. President Bush's quick response to the USSS agent most likely prevented his own assassantion
Personally,I think the SS agent should have pulled out an ak-47 and made his way through to the president by whatever means necessary. This may well have been a Chilean assasination attempt.
They have the radios at their cuffs and the earphone so that they don't have to shout out directions. Anyone could call out instructions, under your plan, and get the president to hesitate.
Fox this am is saying Chilean security and the US secret service had a big hoo ha yesterday, before this incident. Most heads of state don't bring security detail everywhere, evidently. But GW does, of course. This was a big machismo thing by Chile security, who now have a worldwide black eye courtesy of GW. Nice right hook, GW!
I disagree. He should have put his Glock up that bastard's nose and told him to stand down or fall down.
