President Bush stepped into the middle of a confrontation and pulled his lead Secret Service agent away from Chilean security officials who barred his bodyguards from entering an elegant dinner for 21 world leaders Saturday night.

Several Chilean and American agents got into a pushing and shoving match outside the cultural center where the dinner was held. Bush noticed the fracas after posing for pictures on a red carpet with the summit host, Chilean President Ricardo Lagos and his wife and first lady Laura Bush.

Acutally, I am sure it is being handled adequately behind the scenes.

The sooner we let this story to fade away, the better.

The other thing you noticed is that the other leaders entered the main door with their spouses only, not with a security detail in tow.

That is all that happened here. The Secret Svc. didn't follow the established protocol. Only the leaders were to enter through the main door. Other agents were surely inside already to receive the President.

For some reason, after I downloaded the new Real Player I can't get the RealVideo codec to work on my computer. So, thanks for the link, but I can't play it.

There are just too many people milling around.

I highly recommend for everyone to watch the video.

Video.... can be found at:
http://teletrece.canal13.cl/

It starts after minute 18, a little over a third through the 45 min video, and it's a couple of minutes with Bush, but wtch it another minute to get a feel of what's going on.

The picture I was referring to showed everyone with their back to the President, and while I don't know who was who in the picture, it seems from what I have read that the President would have had his back unprotected at the time.

The whole thing is strange!

Choose Ye,

But its hard to beleive that the SS didn't inform the chilean security ahead of time that this one guy always stays with the president.

Apparently someone to whom we have been responding is measuring their worth by the number of replies they provoke.

I for one have contributed enough for one night to that someone's misguided sense of worth.

I forswear further replies to same.

The reporters even say, right after the "incident" that only the leaders were entering through the main door. Aides and security detail had another entrance to use.

The one thing I did hear, at the beginning of the video clip, is that Chile was putting on this summit with a "presupuesto austero," or an austere budget (which is why it apparently is being held inside an old train station). I hope they didn't skimp on security.

What they had here was a failure to communicate.

I don't know who screwed up. But no other leader went through the front door with a bodyguard. If the plans were in place, and we agreed to them, the agent wasn't supposed to go through with the Prez. He would have been just on the other side of the door waiting, and kept going with W. No one else was supposed to enter the doorway, because it would mess up the photo op, as they snapped pictures of Chile's president and First Lady with each visiting dignitary in the open doorway. It's a dumb place for a photo shoot, but everyone else was playing along.

I thought about that too. The Bush's entered first. One would suppose that SS agents would have gone in ahead of them. Could be the remaining agents who were held up at tyhe door were not known/recognized by the Chilean security service, who were there to provide security also for their President. What a mess. However, if an assasination plot was underway, preventing the entry of the lead security agents might have been part of the plan. This could have been an actual attempt against President Bush or even a "dry run". God help us.

Your point is well taken. And I apologize for my earlier comment.

Personally,I think the SS agent should have pulled out an ak-47 and made his way through to the president by whatever means necessary. This may well have been a Chilean assasination attempt.

Given that we are war, do you think it makes sense for the President to enter an area with no secret service covering his immediate rear. Frankly, I could care less about diplomatic protocols or Chilean sensitivities if it interferes in the slightest with the protection of the President. Maybe in the future it is best not to deal with countries like Chile whose security services apparently can't understand that the President of the United States is a special person who needs special protection.

LOL! Do you think that Soros is paying them cash for the number of responses they can count?

That was my first thought, why on earth wouldn't they let the President's secret service in? Funny, but when I heard GWB was going there yesterday, I immediately began praying for him.

Next time I'll pray for the secret service, too. :)
