In light of how the media and political elites in Europe continue to denounce the war in Iraq and openly criticize the reelection of President George W. Bush, it is surprising that their reaction to the replacement of Secretary of State Colin Powell with Condoleezza Rice has been so favorable. After all, Powell was widely regarded in Europe as the single moderate voice in an administration of hawks.
Despite the positive remarks about Condoleezza Rice from German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and his French counterpart Michel Barnier, it is important not to underestimate the depth of anti-Americanism in Europe and its impact on U.S. foreign policy around the world.

It is important to understand that modern American conservatism has no equivalent in Europe and has never been accepted as legitimate in European intellectual circles, which are monolithically both secular and liberal. There is no National Review or Weekly Standard, no talk radio personalities or Fox News to challenge the liberal orthodoxy. Serious ideological diversity among think-tanks and political foundations in any European country is negligible.
Just how much influence do these opinion shapers have? The Pew Research Center's Global Attitudes Survey from March this year noted that "solid majorities in France and Germany believe the U.S. is conducting the war on terrorism in order to control Mideast oil and dominate the world." In Turkey "as many as 31 percent say that suicide attacks against Americans and other Westerners in Iraq are justifiable." Turkey is important, because it stayed out of the coalition in Iraq and we know whose club it wants to join.

We owe billions? Fine, just call it the WWI and WWII war debt (with interest) you never repaid. All the history books at my school were very clear that only Sweden repaid their war debt to the ... or have you succeeded in re writing that part of the factual account as well?
And I don't think I need to remind you of the outcome...
The highest debt ever, and you call this
Is that your understanding of the totality of what makes an economy strong? Try looking at GDP, productivity rates, employment figures, inflationary rates, etc.
Gulf War I has been completely refinanced by non-participating nations, such as mine and Japan + several Emirates.
I doubt the "refinancing" of any of our actions is based on altruism. I would also like to see some detailed evidence of this "refinancing" particularly the structure of the "refinancing". I don't suppose that there is some sort of profit motive involved....
You did. Sorry.
You misspelled "do", sorry.
Rarely a day goes by that I don't give thanks for the courage and conviction of my ancestors for having the for-site to leave the dying Continent of Europe and the cancer known as Germany.
You can't even take care of problems on your own continent with out our leadership. Face it your better days are far behind you and with out realizing the arrogance of your ways, Europe will fall back further in to the dust heap of history.
Hallo Hun,
howdy hun

Yah, I saw that.

are you serious?
I happen to have lived my entire life in germany, and I can assure you that I don't hate you or other US citizens. neither do any of the people I know.
to be honest, I'm not aware of hating anyone; of course there are people who I don't get along with too good, but I surely don't HATE them.
IMO, it takes quites a lot to really hate someone; and I'm shocked to read that some people in the US are under the impression that they are hated (not only hated, but "really and truly hated") by europeans, just because european politicians don't like the idea of Bush being president of the USA.
since the (foreign) policy of the US has an impact on many other countries, the politicians of those other countries dare to express their discomfort - so what?
someone mentioned propaganda and biased coverage in european media; has the thought of propaganda in your own media ever crossed your mind?
when I read subtitles like "They hate us, they really and truly hate us", that sounds a bit like biased coverage to me.
as for europeans being jealous of the USA:
the US surely are a fascinating country, with many assets but also many drawbacks - just like any other country.
you don't have some of the problems other countries have, but OTOH you have some problems that other countries don't have.
US citizens claiming to know that europeans were jealous of them just gives kind of an insight to their self-image. one could get the impression that the US think of themselves as being "God's own country", "the land of the brave", "the only superpower in the world" and of europe being a bunch of small, backwards countries who envy the US of having such a great president (who was sent by God, according to some of his supporters), of having such a strong economy (*cough cough*) and of the "American way of life".
but maybe it's just the first time that many people in the US become aware of the fact that they aren't being (and never have been) admired as superior beings by "old europe" as they have always been suggested by US media and politicians, but are regarded as human beings just like the people in any other country in the world.
again I have to say that I am shocked, really and truly shocked about some of the statements I read in this forum.
I honestly hope that those statements are the opinion of just a small minority of US citizens, otherwise I may have to revise my picture of the US.
and no, I don't expect anyone to care about my opinion.
live long and prosper.....
What are they gonna do about it?
