Last week, President George W. Bush finally signaled his intention to push for the immigration reform plan he unveiled nearly one year ago. Thats good news for a proposal that offers a creative solution to a long-standing problem. The plan, designed to grant temporary legal status to millions of undocumented aliens working in the United States, met a chilly reception when it was announced in January. Bush did little to promote it during the presidential election.

The measure is certain to face intense opposition. Republican members of Congress have argued Bushs temporary worker program rewards and therefore encourages illegal immigration. Members of both parties see immigration as a security threat in the post-Sept. 11, 2001, world. Some unions believe immigrants will undercut U.S. workers.

Concern that immigrant workers compete with U.S. workers for scarce jobs is equally mistaken. Most immigrant laborers fill positions that U.S. workers pass over retail and service-sector jobs that pay low wages and require little skill.

The Bush proposal takes a more enlightened approach. It sees immigration as a net gain for the economy and ties temporary legal status to gainful employment. It wisely stops short of amnesty by requiring immigrant workers to eventually return home

I agree that Judges and the courts are the biggest roadblock to the enforcement of immigration labor laws. It should also be noted that Congress and (especially) this administration have added mightily to the problem by creating perverse welfare incentives for Mexicans (and others) to enter our country illegally and have purposely limited the resources for effective Border Control. Hence, it's difficult for me to believe that they want to enforce employer sanctions when everything else they do suggests otherwise.
Look at what happened with Reagan's amnesty in 1986.
The Tancredo plan is not an amnesty, it does not legalize illegal aliens. Do you not grasp that? There is no comparison between the Tancredo plan and the Reagan amnesty. The apt comparison is between every other plan and the Reagan amnesty.
Opponents of illegal aliens who do not support Tancredo only weaken his stand against the amnesties coming from the White House and both chambers of Congress.
Are you saying we have a standing army of hostile foreign nationals in the United States?
Yes, I do. You quite obviously do not grasp my point. I don't know how else to say it other than you seem to believe "in government we trust"...apparently.
"True Statement"
BS!!
Illegals are getting wages that are $20/hr and more. There are a lot of citizens that would love to get those wages. These bastards have driven the wages down to where I can't charge more than I was making over 20 years ago.
I've written hundreds of e-mails to everyone in Washington, but they are not listening.
They all know that last place you can get some real insight into the problem is from the guy the ends up cleaning up their mess.
If you grasped that, then you should also grasp that every aspect of your digression regarding the Reagan amnesty and Tancredo's guest worker proposal is impertinent
I don't know how else to say it other than you seem to believe "in government we trust"...apparently.
Look, you've either got government or vigilantes, and vigilantes aren't going to get it done.
Tancredo is the best guy in the government, but you won't support him because you're a Utopian dilettante. You'd rather grumble on your porch in a rocker whittling your turds than do anything proactive.
Next!
Point me to to information amnesty attempts that have failed in the past.
Perhaps I have more to learn on the subject.
However, the only way you'e going to get illegals to leave is if their jobs dry up here, and I don't see that happening.
Many of those companies would replace their workers with legal guest workers. However, there are companies that are more than willing to take advantage of those with few choices. Those would continue the employ the illegal aliens.
bookmarked for later
The Reagan amnesty in in 1986 and three lesser Clinton amnesties during his Aministration (about a million total) all left us with more illegal aliens at the end of the process than we had at the beginning.
However, the only way you'e going to get illegals to leave is if their jobs dry up here, and I don't see that happening.
Many of those companies would replace their workers with legal guest workers.
That's precisely how it would happen.
However, there are companies that are more than willing to take advantage of those with few choices. Those would continue the employ the illegal aliens.
There is currently a voluntary program by which employers can verify with the IRS whether or not an employee or applicant is legally eligible for employment in the U.S. Simply make that mandatory, and everyone will know who the illegal employees are, and who's hiring them. One of the big excuses for nonenforcement is that no one knows where the illegal aliens are. There is now a program that can remove that excuse.
No I'm saying we have millions of people who desparately want to make lives for themselves and are desparately against going back to Mexico.
An army. No. A huge desparate mob. Quite possibly.
An army we can handle, because our country can deal with enemy armies. It's difficult, but we can deal with it.
People who just want a chance to make a life for themselves are something America isn't prepared to fight against.
It's a battle we aren't prepared to face.
It may not happen in my life time but the time will come when there is more foreigners in this country than not.
Don't tell me how we are all decendents of immigrants. You know what I'm talking about. And when the lefties pass the rule that lets foreign born be president, they [ the aliens] will out vote the white european male.
Come to think of it, it probably will be in my life time.
But he is likely "working" several hours a day going through help wanted ads, making phone calls, typing up resumes, filling out job applications, going to job interviews, making visits to state and private employment agencies, etc.
More then likely.
I will fight it to my dying day.
"But he is likely "working" several hours a day going through help wanted ads, making phone calls, typing up resumes, "
Very true, and a lot of people work two jobs when they have to, my point is that Jose has not taken Joe Sixpacks job.
Don't be rediculous. How close would you space them?
Over 7000 miles of land borders north and south.
At 10ft intervals it would take 3,900,000 plus troops at any given time. How many hours a day. 12 hour shifts would take twice that many. 8 hour shifts 3 times that.
How about 100 yards apart? 129,000 plus x's 2 or 3 depending on shift.
There aren't enough troops not enough money.
Think about it. Who would roof your house?
Think again.
Come on guy, get your pro-invasion rhetoric together.
You should've said: But you'll starve to death on an unmown lawn in front of a house with no roof.
Who'll do the topiary?
Oh the humanity!
WRONG!
Most VISIBLE "immigrant workers" (INVADERS!) work jobs that "U.S. workers pass over". Everyone knows about and sees the "farm worker's", while ignoring the invaders increasing presence in the "good" jobs!
The ones taking the good paying ($15 hr. and more!) jobs in construction, manufacturing, etc., are "out of sight - out of mind" and conveniently forgotten by the invaders apologist!
Time to make ALL illegal entry a FELONY on FIRST offense, and to put some real teeth into laws against hiring illegals.
You are 100% correct.
