MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) -- Sen. John McCain scolded an Arab television station for repeatedly airing video of a U.S. Marine killing an apparently unarmed man in Iraq but not film of a British hostage being killed by her kidnappers.
"Shame on Al-Jazeera and shame on those people for doing what they did," McCain, R-Ariz., said in response to a question after a speech Thursday.
Al-Jazeera was among Arab stations that aired video of the Marine shooting and killing the man in a mosque in Fallujah. The video fanned anti-American feelings throughout the Mideast, where it dominated news coverage Wednesday.
Al-Jazeera said it chose not to air videotape showing the killing of a blindfolded woman believed to be Margaret Hassan, a longtime British aid worker in Iraq.
"We don't show acts of killing," Jihad Ballout, Al-Jazeera spokesman, said. "We've never done it before, outside war."
McCain, a Navy pilot held prisoner for years in Vietnam, was asked whether the government should exercise more control over film and reports by media embedded with U.S. military units. The questioner cited the Marine shooting video, which was taken by NBC News.
He said he didn't know, but is "deeply, deeply troubled" by the incident.
"We don't know what events led up to it," he said.
"All we saw was a flash picture."
McCain's visit to New Hampshire was enough to start the buzz about the 2008 presidential primary. He beat President Bush in the Republican presidential primary in 2000.
The Arizona Republican was asked by reporters whether he would run again as he did in 2000.
"I'm not ruling it out, but I'm not ruling it in," McCain told The Union Leader.
Noting that Bush hadn't yet celebrated his sec ond inauguration, the Arizona senator said he will think about running in "maybe a couple of years."
The man will be 72 years old in 2008 - I don't think he's gonna run - I think he's playing with the media again. He likes to do that alot. It drives them nuts.
Heck - he needs to rebuke NBC too...
Where is the nearest microphone and camera?
That's all you need to know.
We should pull all of GEs defense contracts too
This from the network who brought us the Berg video, but ruled the murder of Fabrizio Quattrocchi as being too explicit. Some how I doubt their motives.
This guy has all the trappings of a Republican version of Joe Biden.
You're kidding. Beheadings of innocents are considered "war".
Islamic porno.
