MILWAUKEE -- A radio talk show host drew criticism Thursday after calling Condoleezza Rice an "Aunt Jemima" and saying she isn't competent to be secretary of state.John Sylvester, the program director and morning personality on WTDY-AM in Madison, said in a phone interview Thursday that he used the term on Wednesday's show to describe Rice and other blacks as having only a subservient role in the Bush administration.
Rice has served as President Bush's national security adviser and was named this week to replace the departing Colin Powell as secretary of state.
Sylvester, who is white, also referred to Powell as an "Uncle Tom" - a contemptuous term for a black whose behavior toward whites is regarded as fawning or servile.
He said Thursday night that he was referring to remarks by singer and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte that the price of admittance for blacks to the Bush White House was subservience.
As for Rice, "they're using her for an illusion of inclusion," he said, adding that he feels her history as national security adviser showed a lack of competence.
Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz called the remarks "racially insensitive," while Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., said in a statement he joined "all Wisconsinites in rejecting" the statements.
Linda Hoskins of the NAACP's Madison branch said she could not comment on Sylvester's remarks until she had heard them in their entirety.
The station's corporate office received about 100 calls about his comments, Sylvester said.
He added that he has a long history of commitment to civil rights and has supported Madison's black community.
He said he was planning a giveaway on Friday's show of Aunt Jemima pancake mix and syrup. "I will apologize to Aunt Jemima," he said.
The incident came after a radio host in Milwaukee had his talk show taken off the air all of last week after he used word "wetback" to refer to undocumented Mexican immigrants, sparking protests from Hispanics.

Low life morons.
as my sainted spouse likes to say, with Condi we will have our first Competent-American Woman Secretary of State
After all, he may have been referring to reports that Dr. Rice happens to cook really good pancakes...
It's changing though. Slowly, but surely, it's changing.
There is a difference between postings to a (more or less) unmoderated forum and broadcasting on the radio. I think the worst stuff is, quite appropriately, pulled from FR quite promptly.
well I cant say what gets pulled...since many times I just see "removed by moderator"
but in the past there have been plenty of big-lipped, step and fetch it type photoshops that were left up... probably because they were posted by long time FR members.
but really some of them were WAY over the line, and much worse than the cartoons etc, that people have drawn attention to.
I'm not denying that some of the anti Condi stuff is over the line, but there has been a lot worse left up for on FR...and assuming the links aren't dead, they still are up here on FR.
Frankly, I haven't seen it. I'll just have to take your word for it. I think the vast majority of FReepers are offended by that sort of thing.
She looks like the Terminator! 2% total body fat, muscles in her cheeks, and a row of teeth that could chomp through steel!
I'm soooo confused I thought it was the right-wing that was racist?
Meanwhile, Mark Belling was suspended from a Milwaukee station for using the term "wetback".
But that's different. Mark Belling is an evil-extremeist-radical-fundimentalist-rightwing nazi who wants to cut down all the trees, kill bambi, kick grand ma out into the street and force her to eat dog food.
Do you mean the NAALCP? If this remark had been made about a Lie-beral Black, this Hoskins [term for female dog] woulda been ALL over it, regardless of whether she had heard the comment in ANY part.
Let's get even and elect her President!
You ought to know the answer to that. One week off the air and not paid for it, that's all I ask.
"That's a tough test to pass, isn't it?"
I'd file it under: Nice Work If You Can Get It.
Exactly!
The silence will be deafening from black Democrats, of course. They've learned to love plantation life.
It is time to take down this radio host John Sylvester, for making racist remarks.
