Voters made a choice last election reflecting their desires to accomplish. They want to live the American dream and are realizing who is offering them the best opportunity to achieve it. Now it's up to the people to make their dreams come true, they can. It's amazing how many companies were started out of the house while people were working elsewhere.

Not being paid while you're not doing what you were hired to do?! THE HORROR!

Did you actually RTFA? She said "During the unpaid stretches, she was told to clean up and stock merchandise." That is work for which she should have been paid. Do you expect her to "clean up and stock merchandise" for free?

The world will always deal you exactly as much crap as you are willing to accept.

"No" is the most powerful word you can use. If you position yourself to say no to any deal, you can control it. In a job, this means the ability to quit.

If you find yourself in a position where you can't say no, work to remedy the situation.

I am not quite sure what you are trying to say. But when I voted for Dubya two weeks ago, I didn't vote to legalize theft in the name of keeping your job.

If you are saying, if you don't like your circumstances, go start your own business, I agree. That's what I did and I work less and make more than anyone my age.

However, I didn't achieve my modest success by forcing people to work for me off the clock or paying less than what they worked. I did by honoring my deal to pay them a fair wage, rewarding them when the firm did well and giving them challenging projects to work on.

Furthermore, starting my own business took a tremendous toll on my credit, health and emotional well being during the early going. I worked a sh-tty part time job to meet minimum expenses and I can tell you that if I was forced to work off the clock and not get paid for it, I would not be where I am today.

I have nothing but contempt for these companies. Anyone who views these employees as part of the "whiner culture" needs to get their head screwed on straight.

***Many people who study business practices say off-the-clock work has become more prevalent because middle managers face greater pressure to lower labor costs and because the managers' bonuses may even be tied to cutting those costs. ***

So it's okay to screw over the workers so the manager gets a good bonus.

People succeed in environments where they enjoy their work. There is no need for a clock, people are looking forward to the next day and unaware of the day's end. Many have struggled financially in the beginning only to be rewarded down the road. Your company, your control, your dream, your family's if they want it.

but it didn't use to work that way, at least at car dealerships. the mechanics at the dealers were employees, making a salary. If alot of cars came in that day, they were doing jobs all day long. On a slow day, maybe not. But their salary wasn't adjusted on a daily basis.

I was wrong about her being forced to work between paying shifts. Bad employer. However, I believe that employers should be able to set their own terms, even if most people think they are unfair. The market will take care of things.

I'm sure he would love to be in the company of someone who shares his interest seeing as he spends most of his time around automobiles, he tinkers more now, He's not as young as he used to be but still has the passion. I'd bet you'd get a kick outta him he's one of those 50's hot-rodder types and my hero. I am also 35 Y.O. BTW.
