COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Democrats and Republicans are responding to news that a House Democrat appears ready to switch parties.

Rep. Derrick Seaver, of Minster, will hold a news conference Friday with Ohio Republican Party Chairman Bob Bennett and the new House Speaker Jon Husted. Husted, a Dayton Republican, said Seaver approached him over the summer about switching to the Republican party.

Seaver has called himself a conservative in a like-minded district. He opposes abortion and is a member of the National Rifle Association.

Bennett said he had spoken with Seaver several times about the lawmaker's party affiliation because he voted like a Republican.

Rep. Chris Redfern, of Port Clinton, the top-ranking House Democrat, issued a statement saying Seaver would disappoint his constituents by changing parties.
