NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, NEW YORK TIMES, LA TIMES AND, etc.
Col. Nathan R. Jessep.
Do you remember his remarks? And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives.

Jessep: You can't handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has walls. And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns.

I love that movie. But the ending is rather sad. I always root for them to let Jessup go back to Guantanamo and keep defending us...
While the movie and Nicholson's performance did a good job of reversing the meaning of those words and making him out to be a maniacal misfit - the written words stand for themselves and deliver quite a statement.
To think Rob Reiner made that movie, too!
The only problem with that whole movie is that Jack Nicholson didn't choke Tom Cruise to death in the courtroom.
speaking of hollyweird trashing veterans... I accidentally caught about 5 minutes (all I could stand) of tom cruise playing that crippled wheelchair guy (born on 4th of july?) and he was having a fight with another wheelchaired veteran about who killed more babies and who was ORDERED to kill babies in viet nam. this kind of drivel is a DIRECT RESULT of j effing kerry lieing about 'atrocities'
bastiges made me want to puke
I'm still waiting for the sequel.
You know, when Tom Cruise is called in to defend the commander from charges that inept soldiers were killed on the front lines because he didn't find sensitive and caring ways to motivate them during their training.
In their minds the ELITES are always correct and they want the rest of the country to believe they are corect!
I also like the Kevin Bacon character, who instantly carries out the law, whether against the accused Marines or against Jessup.
Even Demi Moore's mini-speech is pretty good: "Why do you like them so much?" "Because they stand a wall and say, 'Nothing will hurt you tonight.'" (may not be the exact quotation). Actually, it was a remarkable movie coming from Reiner.
You're right.
Who's gonna do it? You, GE, you NBC, CBS, NEW YORK TIMES?
I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for the Iraqi and you curse the Marines.
You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that the Iraqi's death, while tragic, probably saved lives.
And our existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives...You GE, you NBC, CBS, NEW YORK TIMES don't want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall.
We use words like honor, code, loyalty...we use these words as the backbone to a life spent defending something. And you GE, you NBC, CBS, NEW YORK TIMES what do you USE?
You use 'em as a punchline.
I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to you GE, you NBC, you CBS, you NEW YORK TIMES who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it! I'd rather you just said thank you and went on your way.
Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post.
Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you're entitled to!
Great speech given by a man who is the personification of hedonism. Personally, I never confuse movies with reality.
Anybody know where I can get an audio clip of this line?
As I think about it, it's classic Meathead Liberalism.
Jessup's monologue is spot on. Completely correct. All that is set aside by a shyster lawyer going after Jessup on a technicality.
It's Abu Gharab again. Let's ignore the larger, more strategic reason why the forces are deployed. Let's also ignore the heightened circumstances. At the end of the day, a 't' wasn't crossed, so your career has to go.
Not exactly. He ordered an enlisted marine beaten, resulting in his death, thereby makinging him responsible for the marine's death.
It is truly sad that that many do get the movies confused with reality.
Further, it is also sad that many think because one can act that they have the intellect for other things, like how the country should be managed.
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
George Orwell
that's "enlisted Marine".
You are quite right. My apologies to all Marines.
Not exactly. He ordered what he believed to be punishment that would not reflect on the soldier's record.
The rag had a substance on it that caused lactic acidosis, which led to the soldier dying.
At best, you have involuntary manslaughter maybe, and disobeying a command directive (not even a direct order).
I've been at the receiving end, as well as the giving end, of exactly the same type of punishments, and I'll tell you that they work.
The deceased wasn't beaten. A beating wouldn't have to happen. All you have to do is put the guy in front leaning rest while you read the WSJ. By the time you get finished reading the front page, the recruit is generally in a much more training-receptive mode.
