A winter storm battered states from the Plains across the Midwest on Wednesday, sending travelers slipping and sliding over icy roads, dumping a foot of snow over some areas and pushing temperatures to bitter-cold levels.

Overnight - Cloudy with periods of light lake effect snow. Localized accumulations of 1 to 3 inches possible by morning... especially across southern Cook County nearest the lake. Lows zero to 5 above...except 10 to 15 along the lake front. Breezy north winds 10 to 15 mph increasing to 15 to 25 mph. Wind chill readings 10 below to 20 below zero.
