Leslie Cifelli, a spokeswoman for Public Service Electric & Gas Co., said an automatic transfer switch failed for an unknown reason at 11:55 a.m., cutting power to fewer than 1,000 residential and commercial customers. Most of those who lost power were in the sprawling Newport development along Jersey City's waterfront, including the mall, Cifelli said.
