Palestinian Islamic Jihad sites shut down by Pentagon? No.

The story (AP, via Haaretz):
The militant Palestinian group Islamic Jihad said Tuesday the Pentagon had blocked its four Web sites because they contained news and pictures supporting the Palestinian resistance against Israeli occupation.

In a statement faxed to The Associated Press, Islamic Jihad said the Ukrainian company that hosted the sites had come under "U.S. pressure" to stop them.

"The company has sent a letter apologizing for not being able to host these Web sites because they contained news and pictures supporting the Palestinian resistance at a direct request from the Pentagon," the statement said, referring to the U.S. Defense Department.

It did not name the Ukrainian company.

Saying the U.S. move was "aimed at silencing a Palestinian resisting voice," the statement said Islamic Jihad will continue its efforts "to reveal the truth" of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Why neither AP nor Haaretz bothered to fact check this press release before running the story is anyone's guess.

The reality is that most of PIJ's sites were hosted in the United States until September when they were removed as a result of 'Al Haganah' type activity, and they haven't been seen since.

One PIJ site, jamaaway.org, is still active and online in the United States:

jamaaway.org
ID: 235
Status: active
URL: http://www.jamaaway.org/
IP: 63.208.120.199
Datacenter: Co-Location.com Inc., a Level3.Net customer with offices in Beverly Hills, California, USA

(If someone could do me a favor and contact Co-Location.com I'd appreciate it. I'm currently, um, out of the office in a big way).

The PIJ's qudsway.com/.net/.org site is still online in Iran.

I'm not aware of/don't recall any connection between the PIJ and any company or datacenter in Ukraine.

I can only assume that Palestinian Islamic Jihad cooked up this story because Hamas is getting good publicity with their "Al Hagana is attacking us" story and PIJ wanted to do them one better.
