KABUL (Reuters) - Three Afghan prison guards and two prisoners were killed in a jail break attempt by al Qaeda inmates Friday and a shoot-out was going on between police and another two, the chief of Kabul's Pul-i-Charki prison told Reuters.

The prisoners killed by guards were Pakistani and Iraqi al Qaeda members who had been arrested in Kabul by Afghan security forces, prison chief Abdul Salam Bakhshi said.

Consulate Attackers Wanted U.S. Hostages

Dec. 16, 2004 — The men who attacked the U.S. Consulate in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia, on Dec. 6 and killed five non-U.S. employees had planned to take American hostages, U.S. officials told ABC News.
