The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

"We should have secured the Mexican border."

That could be the pitiful lament we hear from negligent U.S. officials if Al Qaeda pulls off an attack on the United States using weapons of mass destruction smuggled across our southern frontier.

Were that horrendous event to happen, leaders in the administration and Congress would be justly hit with the same question that was perhaps unjustly cast at them and their predecessors after the unprecedented Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks: Why didn't they connect the dots?

There will be plenty of borderline, mentally diseased sociopaths who use the next attack to perpetrate random violence against the targets of their hate. Many folks who "looked like" Muslims (Hindus, Sikhs, Christian Arabs, etc) were victimized after 9/11. It is terrorism. Vigilante justice is terrorism. Retribution against an entire community (or faith) is terrorism.

I am not sure what a Muslim/Islamic/terrorist "looks like". Bosnians, Albanians, and Chechens look very different from Arabs, Indonesians, or Nigerians. But there are plenty who seem to know who "the Islamics" are. I suggest to them that instead of being a vigilante after the fact, you save us all the trouble and go tell the "authorities" who these enemies in our midst truly are. Therefore, by giving folks the benefit of your special insight *before* rather than *after* the fact, you save everybody a lot of misery. Otherwise, you do not know innocent from guilty. And any "retribution" against generic American "Muslims" would make one a murderous piece of trash - - no better and no different from the monsters who seek to slay the innocent.

Retribution against innocent civilians makes *you* one of *them*.

I suggest a simple rule which applies broadly. If you see an act of lethal violence in progress against innocent civilians (and the belief in justice demands that *all* are innocent until proven guilty), no matter the nature of the perpetrator and no matter the color, creed, age, gender or background of the victim, you are duty-bound by God to stop it.

Everytime. Everywhere. Everyone.

If it is "the day after" and you know one of our mentally unbalanced brethren who is just itching to give a name to his pain and take out his fear and rage on the most accessible Muslim, you have a moral duty to God to turn him in to the authorities.

If it is "the day before" and you are a Muslim who knows one of your misguided brethren has decided that the name of his pain is all "Christians and Jews", and to end the pain he must put an end to the lives of as many Christians and Jews as possible, you have a moral duty to God to turn him in to the authorities.

When the vigilantes go do their thing after the next attack, it is imperative we make examples out of them. We will be too busy trying to save lives and prevent follow-on attacks to start guarding every mosque, gas station, or dry cleaner that isn't "lily-white" from the domestic terrorists that lurk among us.

If civil order breaks down, they will bring in the National Guard and treat the vigilantes with the street justice that they themselves seek to dispense, and in a truly poetic justice - - they will be forced to shoot them on sight. And thank God that they will.

Our domestic terrorists are blood brothers with the Islamic extremists.

There is a hideous evil lurking among us, and they are not "Muslims".
But they *are* terrorists.

How do you identify the "enemy" who somehow deserves retribution? Anyone who looks "Mideastern"? What about Sephardic Jews, Egyptian Copts, Lebanese Christians, Syrian Orthodox, Palestinian Christians, and Iraqi Chaldeans? What about Hispanics or light-skinned Blacks? Some of them look like Arabs. What about Muslims from the countries with the largest Islamic populations (which are not Middle Eastern) - - Indonesia, India, Pakistan, and Nigeria? They certainly do not look Arab. Bosnians, Albanian and Chechen Muslims can be blond-haired and blue-eyed.

*Everyone* "looks" guilty. And the only "guilt" involved is one's ethnicity or religion. And if you believe that, you are as bad as the terrorists.

Maybe they will start making Muslims wear little embroidered yellow crescents - - so we can tell "them" apart from "us". Maybe they will be issued them when we set up the camps - - for their own protection from the vigilante violence.

But if all Muslims are terrorists (and if it is never moral to rob the innocent of freedom when freedom is not ours to give or take but God's, then either all the incarcerated or those who incarcerate them must be criminals) and all terrorists must be destroyed (since you cannot appease or compromise with terror), then what does that leave but a final solution? (eliminate all Muslims?)

Now take the sentence above and take the word "Muslim" and substitute "Christian/American/Jew/infidel" and you switch from vigilante Crusader to murderous Jihadi with that one word. Not much separates the two. They are both cut from the same cloth.

If anyone commits an act of violence against a Muslim, it is our deepest moral obligation as human beings to use all force necessary to neutralize the source of the violence. Even, if like Tim McVeigh, the vigilante sees himself as a patriotic American.

If it is the morning before the "single day of horror", and a Muslim becomes aware that such an extreme act of violence against innocent civilians is being prepared, he is duty-bound before God, even at the risk of his life, to stop it.

And if it is the morning after that single day of horror, and you are a Christian aware that someone you know has decided to take revenge and "teach the Islamics a lesson" by going on a spree of random violence against innocent people who have committed no crime, then you are duty-bound before God, even at the risk of your life, to do all within your power to stop them, because what they propose is terrorism.

Terrorism is, by definition, the willful targeting of civilians by the implied threat or actual use of violence.

We cannot ask Muslims to challenge the terrorists in their own undemocratic and unjust societies if we do not prove that we will be willing to deal swiftly with our own when they rear their ugly heads in what we declare and believe to be a democratic and just society - - one nation under God.

I'm sure for a few days, in certain areas, vigilantes will succeed in perpetrating their crimes, but it will not last. They will be shut down and cut down in short order.

And I am sure that there are many different kinds of brave people that when they see an act of violence being prepared - - if they know someone is about to attack a group of unarmed civilians - - their conscience will tell them what to do.

Terrorism is pure evil.
Everytime. Everywhere.
For Everyone.
