Just wanted to drop in real quick to say hello to everyone.
I've been fairly absent from TM over the past 2 weeks. I wish I could be devoting more time to it, but I am coming down to the wire with the semester here. At the same time, I am running around trying to gather stuff to apply to graduate school and so on. Now I have my Arabic final coming up this Saturday, and exam week next week. :<
I have been checking in from time to time to catch up and am looking forward to becoming more active on the TM again once we approach the end of December.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A fraudulent document manufacturing operation was broken up late Tuesday in Watsonville following an eight-month investigation by police.
Three people were arrested in the sting, which uncovered a healthy sampling of fraudulent permanent resident alien cards, temporary resident alien cards, a few Social Security cards and manufacturing equipment.
Watsonville Police Department teamed up with the Santa Cruz County Narcotics Enforcement Team to serve search warrants at 20 Marin St. and 324 Pennsylvania Drive, apartment 12.
During the search, officers located scads of fake identification cards in various stages of completion, an electronic typewriter, a scanner, a plastic lamination machine, paper cutter and other accoutrements. Police are also writing a warrant to analyze data for a laptop computer found on the premises.
"Police only uncover operations like these every few years," said Sgt. David McCartney. However, of Tuesday's bust, McCartney said, "It sticks out because it's sophisticated and because of the quantity they appear to be doing.""

Haven't we been saying here in the TM that any action or strikes here on home soil will first be initiated overseas? Wonder if this may be the opening volleys?
That was the suspected plan gotten off of Khan's computers IIRC. I haven't seen anything hard enough to call an opening volley. I suspect that a great deal of attention is being given to Iraq and trying to stop the elections there. They cannot show impotence again as they did in Afghanistan. A significant concern that is forming in my mind is a potential incursion by Iran into Iraq in conjunction with a major AQ attack. Second major Iranian military exercise in less than 6 months and we both know what happens when a military is brought uptempo like that.
Somewhere in AQ there is sufficient science skills to engineer such an operation, but the front line terrorists are simply not the scientists with the requisite skill level
Most of what I've read is that the AQ leadership is well educated. I may be a function of a couple of things holding them back. First is Iraq, second is the availability of resources and the means to deliver. A wild card might be that their form of Islam does not sanction that kind of attack. They had to get a special fatwa for nuclear warfare, don't know if they have something similar for attacking food supplies.

Saudi dailies said Fayez Awad al-Jihani was the head of an al Qaeda cell in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, where the brazen daylight attack on the U.S. consulate took place on Monday.
Jihani was one of four attackers who died in the assault. A fifth was wounded and arrested. Saudi authorities identified three of the assailants, none of whom were on a list of top wanted militants.
The attack, in which five non-American consulate staff died, was the first on a Western diplomatic mission and the first big strike in six months in the world's top oil exporter by militants bent on driving Westerners from the cradle of Islam."

This Travel Warning is being updated to inform U.S. citizens of an armed attack on the U.S. Consulate in Jeddah December 6, resulting in casualties among the non-American staff and damage to consulate facilities. Due to such targeted attacks against American facilities and citizens, resulting in deaths, injuries and kidnappings, and the continuing serious threat to their safety while in Saudi Arabia, the Department of State continues to warn U.S. citizens to defer travel to Saudi Arabia. Our Mission in Saudi Arabia remains an unaccompanied post as a result of continued security concerns. Non-emergency employees and all dependents of the U.S. Embassy Riyadh and Consulates General Jeddah and Dhahran were ordered to leave the country on April 15, 2004 and will not be permitted to return until further notice. Private Americans currently in Saudi Arabia are strongly urged to depart. This Travel Warning supersedes that of October 27, 2004.
U.S. citizens are reminded of the potential for further terrorist actions against U.S. citizens abroad, including in the Persian Gulf region. U.S. citizens who travel to, or remain in, Saudi Arabia despite this Travel Warning should register at the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh or at the Consulates in Jeddah and Dhahran, and enroll in the warden system (emergency alert network) to obtain updated information on travel and security in Saudi Arabia. Although counter-terrorism efforts have succeeded in diminishing terrorist capabilities in Saudi Arabia, terrorist groups continue to target housing compounds, hotels, methods of transportation, and commercial establishments where Westerners can be found. Saudi Government facilities are also targets. In addition to car bombs and armed assaults involving multiple gunmen against such facilities, terrorists have also used ambush attacks to kidnap and/or assassinate individual Westerners.
American citizens who choose to visit or remain in Saudi Arabia are strongly urged to avoid staying in hotels or housing compounds that do not apply stringent security measures including, but not limited to, the presence of an armed guard force, inspection of all vehicles, and a hardened security perimeter to prevent unauthorized vehicles from approaching the facility. American citizens are further advised to exercise caution when visiting commercial establishments frequented by Westerners. American citizens are also advised to exercise caution while driving, entering or exiting vehicles.
From time to time, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Saudi Arabia may restrict the travel of official Americans or suspend public services for security reasons. In those instances, the Embassy and Consulates will keep the local American citizen community apprised through the Warden System and make every effort to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens.
As the Department continues to develop information on any potential security threats to U.S. citizens overseas, it shares credible threat information through its Consular Information Program documents, available on the Internet at http://travel.state.gov. This Travel Warning is being issued to remind Americans of continued concerns about the security situation in Somalia. This supersedes the Travel Warning of June 7, 2004.
The Department of State warns U.S. citizens against all travel to Somalia, including the self proclaimed “independent Republic of Somaliland”. Inter-clan and inter-factional fighting can flare up with little warning, and kidnapping, murder, and other threats to U.S. citizens and other foreigners can occur unpredictably in many regions. There is no U.S. Embassy or other U.S. diplomatic presence in Somalia.
There have been attacks against foreigners in the self-declared "Republic of Somaliland" in northern Somalia. The Sanaag and Sool Regions in eastern Somaliland, bordering on Puntland (northeastern Somalia), are subject to insecurity due to potential inter-clan fighting. There have also been s everal fatal attacks against international relief workers, including Westerners, throughout Somalia and Somaliland. In addition, serious fighting has occurred in the Mogadishu area, the Puntland region in northern Somalia, and the districts of Gedo and Bay (especially the vicinity of Baidoa) in the south. Territorial control in the Mogadishu area is divided among numerous groups; lines of control are unclear and frequently shift, making movement within this area extremely hazardous.
U.S. citizens are urged to use caution when sailing near the coast of Somalia. Merchant vessels, fishing boats and recreational craft alike risk seizure and their crews being held for ransom, especially in the waters near the Horn of Africa and the Kenyan border.
The U.S. government cannot provide services to U.S. citizens in Somalia. U.S. citizens who plan to travel to Somalia despite this Travel Warning are urged to register and obtain updated information on travel and security from the U.S. Embassies in neighboring countries. Travelers to the self-declared “Republic of Somaliland” should register with the U.S. Embassy in Djibouti, and travelers to Puntland or southern Somalia should register with the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi.
