Absolutely. (Don't think robins, think ducks, geese, etc.)
One of the B-52s in my unit was almost brought down this way. The bird came right through the cockpit window. Fortunately it went between the pilot and copilot and did not hit anybody.
They were on a low level training mission at the time, and could have easily lost enough control to have crashed (at that altitude, it would not take long...).
Yikes.

The following year, the newly established Sibley College of Mechanical engineering. Hiram Sibley continued to make gifts to develop and expand the program, and after his death in 1888, his good work was carried on by his son, Hiram W. Sibley.

Last night I saw a program on the History channel about the TWA800 crash.
Something I hadn't known that was reported on this program, was the fact that an Arabic paper (Al-Hayat...I think) reported the night before that America would be 'hit' in an unusual manner the next day.

Reports: Student 'obsessed with jihad'
A Wyoming Technical Institute student charged with attempting to help terrorists in Somalia reportedly said he wished he had flown a hijacked plane during the Sept. 11 attacks, federal authorities said.
Mark Robert Walker, 19, of Rochester, N.Y., had become interested in Islam at a mosque in his hometown, said one official familiar with the case, according to the Washington Post.
"He seems like a lost guy who got obsessed with jihad," the official told the newspaper.
Federal prosecutors accuse Walker of planning to supply Ittihad al Islamiya -- which wants an Islamic government in Somalia -- with night-vision goggles and bullet-proof vests. Charging documents say he used the computer of a roommate at the Laramie school, also known as WyoTech, to make the arrangements.
Mark Robert Walker of Rochester, N.Y., was arrested Saturday at the border by agents of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the El Paso Times reported.
Walker allegedly intended to provide support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, Ittihad Al Islamiya, a Somali group. If convicted, he could face 15 years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines
Even though that's inconsistent with timing of 9/11 attacks, it makes sense.

My very likely worthless opinion is that they will try to do a biggie shortly before Christmas, since people are out and about shopping and so on, very busy time, and to have an attack right before Christmas will have a large emotional impact.
And, of course, they hate Christmas. If they have done nothing by the Inauguration then I figure the good guys have taken out too many or disrupted them too much and they are regrouping.
I think your timing assessment is very accurate. They want daylight hours, early-ish in the day so there is plenty of light for media footage.
