The State Dept. has been a left-wing bastion for decades, and Colin Powell was a "go-along-to-get-along" SoS. Condi Rice may be perceived as a shake-up threat to the liberal lock on the State Dept. She is known as a Bush loyalist, and the Clinton appointees plus the old die-hards in the State Dept. may be fearing her. I can't think of another reason for these vicious attacks on her.
