Washington State Governor's Race--Certification (Live Thread)(Rossi (R) wins by 261 votes!)
Washington State Secretary of State ^ | 11/17/2004 | The Conservator

Posted on 11/17/2004 4:44:42 PM PST by TheConservator

This is a LIVE THREAD for discussion of the impending certification of final results in the Washington State Governor's race, between Dino Rossi (R) and Christine Gregoire (D).

The Secretary of State is required to certify the final results this evening. As of 4:28 P.M. PST, Gregoire leads by 29 votes with 2521 votes from 4 or 5 counties left to be reported. King County (the Dem's stronghold) has apparently made its final report.

Washington State law requires a machine recount if the certified results show a difference of less than 2000, which now seems almost certain. It also requires a manual recount if the difference is less than 150 votes. A machine recount is estimated to take a week, a hand recount a month or more.

If the final result were a tie, the winner would be decided by lot.

at least we know they would either throw out the king county "extra votes" or make yakima county and the other conservative counties also allow the "extra votes". but hopefully we won't need to go there.

Benton isn't all in yet, is it ? Rossi should pick up at least 200+ there to pad his lead and protect against any slippage in Gray's Harbor.

Ping me if/when he writes an updated version for the recount. Guess I really should have read the 'You can do this with Excel' book, as I'm fascinated by the spreadsheet.

The machine recount happens if difference is less than 2,000 votes--not 1,200.

I am just hopingf Gray's isn't waiting to see Benton numbers so they know how many votes need to be manufactured.

How can they "throw out" the King County votes? Didn't they just get tossed in with the rest of the count as soon as the judge ruled? There's no way separate them is there?

I thought it had to be finalized (all votes reported by the end of business – 5:30?) and votes not then counted would not be counted.

There have been six recounts in WA history. None has ever changed the certified result.

Yes, the King County votes were all for Gregoire. The Dems asked the judge to allow them to verify them, and he did.

The Pubs then requested the same thing in Yakima county in a very shrewd move as they knew the Lib judge there would say no.

That's what I'm afraid of - - it was screwy there and could get screwier (by my calculations, based on previous counts, R-48.6% and G-49.3%)
