This is a LIVE THREAD for discussion of the impending certification of final results in the Washington State Governor's race, between Dino Rossi (R) and Christine Gregoire (D).
The Secretary of State is required to certify the final results this evening. As of 4:28 P.M. PST, Gregoire leads by 29 votes with 2521 votes from 4 or 5 counties left to be reported. King County (the Dem's stronghold) has apparently made its final report.
Washington State law requires a machine recount if the certified results show a difference of less than 2000, which now seems almost certain. It also requires a manual recount if the difference is less than 150 votes. A machine recount is estimated to take a week, a hand recount a month or more.
If the final result were a tie, the winner would be decided by lot.

Well, it should be over tonight but then the recount starts. Depends if the race is within 150 votes, then it's a manual recount; if over 150, machine recount.

I'm missing something somewhere - Benton had 750 left to count and if the count stayed the same, Rossi should have received 68% of the votes. If he was up by 88 from the previous county, how can he only be up by 98 w Benton in?
To: commish
yep. this would go all the way to SCOTUS.
equal protection clause.... same legal argument that was used in Bush v Gore in 2000! so we know the precedent. can't count votes in one county different than another county for the same statewide election....

I will be sure and pass on your thanks. He lives in WA (I don't) and he's been bonkers over this for two weeks now.
He's planning on making one for the inevitable recount as long as the data is available.
Don't know about 2006, he's been troubleshooting this since the Freepers starting finding little problems. (Talk about unforgiving beta-testers.) Seems pretty solid now.
He's an Excel geek though, so if I just say "I'll bet you couldn't even do it for 2006 if you tried" he'd do it just to spite me. I'll have to remember that...

If Rossi pulls this out, the WA Dem Chairman will have another good cry. Did you all see him crying after the partisan-hack Dem King County judge ruled in his favor. The guy needs a long vacation.

It was a mistake. Read Franklin in place of Benton.

You would have been right if Election was reliable.

I was in error. Franklin, not Benton, reported.

The race will be certified tonight. Then if it is within 1200 votes (IT WILL BE) they start a Machine Recount tomorrow that has to be completed by next Wednesday. If it is within 150 votes (POSSIBLE) then they start a HAND RECOUNT tomorrow and count until they are done.

"Yep, it's up to Benton and GH. I think I need a drink."
It's looking good though. Even if Rossi loses, say, 100 in GH, he only needs to pick up 9 in Benton, and will almost certainly do way better than that. But it's now looking like Rossi has a reasonable chance of avoiding a manual recount if he gets, say, 48 percent in GH and 55% in Benton.
