My first bet would be that North Korea is still playing the part of the crazy Aunt in the attic...and that this is merely part of a ruse on their part to convince the world that they are so crazy that they need to be handled with diplomatic kid gloves.

Kim Jong Il's Team America song:

I'm so Ronery / So Ronery / So Ronery and Sadry Arone / There's No One / Just me Onry / Sitting on my rittle throne / I work very hard and make up great plans / but nobody listens, no one understands / Seems rike no one takes me Serious-RY / And so I'm Ronery / A rittle ronery / Poor rittle me / There's no one I can rerate to / fell rike a bird in a cage / Its kinda sirry / but not rearry / because its firring my body with rage / I'm the smartest most clever most physically fit / but not one at all seems to re-a-rize it / Maybe someday they'll all notice meeee / And until then, I'll be ronery / Yeah, a rittle ronery / Poor rittle me...

Could it be that the North Korean military realized that their fearless leader was a nut job who was going to get a lot of people killed?

"how North Korean TV (male announcer, note the NK communist lapel pin) had referred to Kim Jong-il in the past"

You don't mean past tense, right?

Maybe this has to do with Bush's reelection. Maybe the generals got to him and said, "We're F*****d".

Add that incident to reports of his photos being taken down and it continues to remain interesting. What is the meaning of all of this? Possible successor being planned?

I'm starting to think that China is using NK as a bargaining chip. China wants to have most the influence in NK. Maybe if China takes care of NK then we look the other way on Taiwan. Plus if NK turns more west friendly thats just more cheap labor they can use to make crap to flood our markets.

Kim Jong Il is a fanatical lover of Movies. He could be holed up with a bootleg copy of The Invincibles. But preferably, he's dead or in a rubber cage.
