(I ended up by 'breaking the law' and going where a Qantas laddie suggested - down to the empty Asian terminal where no flights were expected in for awhile, and I could have a puff behind a potted palm...)
Yeah, the "authorities" are deadly on smoking at airports, and now it's spreading everywhere else. You'd reckon Bloomberg was running the show.

You know Ern, QANTAS stands for "queers and nymphos trained as stewards". Potted palm syndrome has got a lot of strangers in far away transit lounges into trouble.
