Reshaping of Bush's cabinet accelerates (mineta & Thompson next?)

WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Colin Powell, a towering political figure who waged a sometimes lonely fight for internationalist approaches to the fight against terror, announced his resignation Monday as the remaking of President Bush's second-term administration picked up speed.

Bush is expected to nominate Condoleezza Rice, his national security adviser, as Powell's replacement Tuesday.

Three other Cabinet members disclosed their departures Monday: Education Secretary Rod Paige, Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham and Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman.

Along with the earlier-announced resignations of Attorney General John Ashcroft and Commerce Secretary Don Evans, the new exodus ensures the Bush administration will have a decidedly different look when the president begins his new term Jan. 20. Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge is also expected to depart.

Monday's announcements brought to six the number of resignations from the president's 15-member cabinet, and the shakeup is likely to proceed. Beyond Ridge, Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, the cabinet's only Democrat, and Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson are also mentioned as likely to leave soon.

Mineta will be good riddence.

After 9-11, he was more worried about hurting the feelings of potential Muslim terrorists, than the traveling public.

I'm with you. I was just saying this to my husband today - I would LOVE to see the ultra-PC Mineta GO.

Carrying Out Transportation Inspection and Safety Responsibilities
In A Nondiscriminatory Manner

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, have raised concerns about intimidation and harassment directed at individuals who are, or are perceived to be, of Arab, Middle Eastern, or South Asian descent and/or Muslim. Federal civil rights laws prohibit discrimination on the basis of a person’s race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, sex, ancestry, or disability.

Do not subject persons or their property to inspection, search and/or detention solely because they appear to be Arab, Middle Eastern, Asian, and/or Muslim; or solely because they speak Arabic, Farsi, or another foreign language; or solely because they speak with an accent that may lead you to believe they are Arab, Middle Eastern, Asian, and/or Muslim.

===

Note this was issued barely one month after 9-11, when we really didn't know how many other attacks could be starting at any time.

I think his whole internment experience warped him, and it's putting Americans at risk. (Buh bye, Norm. Seek help.)

Tommy Thompson's been angling to leave for almost 3 years. He lusts after the position of chief lobbyist for the US auto industry. Seven figures, awesome fully loaded perks of the four-wheeled variety, and an endless supply of steak and bourbon. Not a bad pre-retirement gig, eh?

Let's fo-getta Mineta = the only transportation secretary who guarantees safe passage via container ships, border-jumping, long-line trucking and totally vulnerable railroads. A high school freshman could have come up with a better plan!

Mineta out and Ridge + Thompson out too! Note to the bureaucracy, shape up or/and ship out. Looks like GWB has learned a lot about the PC/DC since 2001.
