LONDON (Reuters) - A television pool report by U.S. network NBC said on Monday that a U.S. Marine had shot dead an unarmed and wounded Iraqi prisoner in a mosque in Falluja.
The Iraqi was one of five wounded prisoners left in the mosque after Marines had fought their way in on Friday and Saturday. There was no immediate comment from the Pentagon (news - web sites) on the report.
U.S. forces launched an offensive one week ago on Falluja, and have gained overall control of the formerly rebel-held city, although scattered resistance remains.
The pool report by NBC correspondent Kevin Sites said the mosque had been used by insurgents to attack U.S. forces, who stormed it and an adjacent building, killing 10 militants and wounding the five.
Sites said the wounded had been left in the mosque for others to pick up and move to the rear for treatment. No reason was given why that had not happened.
A second group of Marines entered the mosque on Saturday after reports it had been reoccupied. Footage from the embedded television crew showed the five still in the mosque, although several appeared to be already close to death, Sites said.
He said one Marine noticed one of the prisoners was still breathing.
A Marine can be heard saying on the pool footage provided to Reuters Television: "He's fucking faking he's dead. He faking he's fucking dead."
"The Marine then raises his rifle and fires into the man's head. The pictures are too graphic for us to broadcast," Sites said. No images of the shooting were shown in the footage provided to Reuters.
The report said the Marine, who had returned to duty after being shot in the face a day earlier, had been removed from the field and was being questioned by the U.S. military.
Sites said the shot prisoner "did not appear to be armed or threatening in any way."
There are rules see post #153.
I second that vigorously.
My webtv doesn't support it.....from your description it sounds like the clip Fox showed...
I believe what has happened is the young Marines opened themselves up and trusted this guy and, probably assumed that he was their good buddy. Little did they know what a snake he really is.
I recall a fable about some animal or frog, that was convinced by, I think a poisonous spider, or maybe a snake to allow it to ride on its back across a river, but halfway across it bit the animal and as the animal died, he asked why it bit him. And the reply was something like, "But that is what I do."
Next time they come across a 'possom player' they should make their embedded reporter check him out.
"Go over there Mr. NBC, flip that body over...make sure there isn't a grenade under him."
"Getting a little tired of these public MEDIA hanging's of our troops in a time of and heat of battle against a non military scumbag terrorist"
Me too.
Euwwwww!
Not even wrapped up in an American flag patterned burqah!
Some things are just too horrid to contemplate.
Maybe fill him full of Viagra and aim him at a mirror, instead. Let him screw himself to death.
Colin Bowel (aka I hate the highway of death) would like to implement your suggestion of a company level JAG officer. Jamie Gorelick will build a virtual wall between observer and trigger man in the field.
You see, it is a complex, conflicted matter of separation of powers....
" Hardball Outrage: Chris Mathews just said the insurgents weren't the "Bad Guys", they were just "defending their country."
Matthews also described them tonight " as people who don't agree with us."
Chris Jansing of MSNBC a few months ago, called them " resistance fighters. "
Actually, after seeing the *full* footage from the BBC link given above, I now have no problems with what our Marine did. Why? Because after our marine shoots the wounded guy, another terrorist in the room raises his hands from under a blanket and surrenders. At least one terrorist in that room **was** playing possum.
If the investigation bears this out, this Marine will rightly face a Court Martial. But given the nature of war, the fact that there are so few incidents of this type speaks well of the training and discipline of our troops.
I LIKE THAT IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"He wasn't surrendering was he? "
don't know; the article said they were left behind enemy wounded by the US forces that had to go on with the mission, and would be evac'd to the rear later . . .
did this squad KNOW that? or did they enter the bldg. not knowing what to expect?
If they knew they were left behind enemy prisoners/wounded, apparently the enemy would have already surrendered to the original US forces . . . Or the original US forces judged them to be not a threat, since they left them there . . .
not second guessing, as I do not know what the Marines knew about this place going in. That is for their chain of command to judge, not the world-wide TV viewing public -- which now, of course, considers themselves qualified to judge the matter . . .
Some of these Marines and soldiers are seeing things every day that many people can't even bear to watch on televison, including their own guys being hurt and killed by these terrorists,
Very well said. Thanks for the words to say what I was feeling.
GOD BLESS OUR FANTASTIC MARINES!! and GOD BLESS That Marine who had just taken a shot to the face the day before and was back in Battle
Right on True!
Yeah, maybe the Devil Dog should have just beheaded him. Maybe he should start thinking about the people on the "American Street" kicking in for the best damn liberal defense lawyer this side of Mecca.
"Kerrry got a medal for the same. I guess NBC wants him to have the Silver Star."
Bears repeating.
And when will MSM show some beheading videos?
How can YOU say it wasn't justified. Do you know he didn't have a hand grenade in his hand, just waiting for the Marine to check and see if he was alive?
There were shot coming from the mosque, that is why they went back. Who was shooting? The guy was sitting by a window, maybe he just slid down the wall and waited. The point is you DON'T know -you weren't there. Are you going to be like the MSM and take the terrorist's side over the Marine's side?
I have been angry about the PC nature of this war since they brought that Sargent(?) up on charges for firing his gun BESIDE the head of a terrorist to scare him into giving up information that proved to save him men's lives. Didn't matter, he is OUT OUT OUT. How many lives might have been saved if he had stayed in.
Remember all of the Iraqi policemen and army men that were lined up and executed by terrorists dressing up in police and army uniforms?
