If, IF..Bush picks LUGAR as Sec State, who would Daniels chose as Indiana's next senator?
one man's opinion....

Posted on 11/15/2004 10:33:56 AM PST by ken5050

Sen Richard Lugar has been mentioned as a possible successor to Colin Powell at State. I think it's unlikely, but there is SOME merit to the idea. Now thatMitch Daniels has been elected as governor, the senate seat would be safe for the GOP, so the arguments for Lugar carry a little more weight. My question, assuming Lugar's appointment for purposes of discussion..who from Indiana gets bumped up to the Senate?

Politically, it's an interesting propositon. I don't think Lugar would run again, so getting a younger person "in place" is a big advantage. Daniels is very close to Bush, and they share a similar philosophy. Any of the Indiana congresscritters fit the bill?

I would prefer Quayle. Didn't Lugar come out in support of illegal aliens?

I like Danforth for Sec of State but believe Condi is holding out to become the next Sec of Defense.

i am still hoping that Bush appoints a few conservative Dems with R Governors in their states to some positions to pad the Senate. Like Lieberman to Israel, Evan Bay to Secretary of Silly Walks or Nelson to Secretary of Pet Frogs or something (you get the idea)
that way we can pick up a few Senate seats and get the Ds in total Defense

Unless I have had the wool pulled over my eyes, I think Don Nickles (OK) is a good Republican and has served for many years in the Senate. He did not run again, and Tom Coburn is the Senator-elect. Seems like Don is looking for his next gig. Anyone have thoughts?

No way does Lugar get SOS. He has publicly beaten on the Bush Admin over their handling of foreign policy. Bush wants a friend in State.

Good thought. 1) It takes out of the Senate a guy who, at times, has been less than conservative in the WOT; 2) It allows Daniels to put in a younger stud who would be tough to beat.

I would even see Bush naming McLame to SoS except that AZ has a Dem Gov. But if we could get Hayworth in McLame's senate seat, I'd let him have State.

Of ALL the Republicans, I trust LUGAR the least.

He always provides the Liberal-Media with fodder to attack GOP with.

If Bush Picks him then I have no doubt Bush would face a HUGE scandal in second term and Dick Luber would be in middle of it - on Liberal's side.

I like Lugar a lot. He'd do well as SoS.

As far as a replacement, I don't know enough about Indiana politics.

I'd rather see Bush appoint Lugar to the Dept. of Tumbleweed Research. Keep the ungrateful boob away from the State Dept. Promote Armitage, with specific orders to purge the 75% of middle mangement (mostly "men") that fantasizes about pulling a Monica on WJC.
