Yeah and Barney Fife was a fascist. I am pretty sure Aunt Bea was a crypto-feminist metaphor for male oppression. But I still can't figure Ernest T. Bass.
To: silent_jonny
There once was a deputy called Fife
Who carried a gun and a knife
The gun was all dusty the knife was all rusty
Cause he never caught a crook in his life

Ironically, as wholesome as the show is, the PC police would never allow such a sitcom to air today. Case in point is the drunk who is a regular on the show. They would never allow that today. Yet they allow the same tasteless off-colour double-entendres that pass as jokes today.

Andy Grittith is a proud Democrat--that's his only flaw. I don't think he's a liberal though. More of a Zell Miller type.

Oh my Barney
Oh my Barney
Oh my darling Barney Fife
Had a jail and couldn't lock it
Had a bullet for his pistol
Had to keep it in his pocket

What about Brisco Darling? Is he a symbol for a typical Red State voter? {:^D

Howard Morris was a fine comedy writer and mimic. His heyday was in the 50's.
